Pulling from the backlist to chat about Demon Copperfield by @barbara.kingsolver (2022) This one follows Damon Fields aka Demon Copperhead....the title had you thinking what? The book is about a boy born into poverty in Appalachia who grows up moving through foster homes, unstable relationships, and the ripple effects of addiction that shape so many communities in that region. The story draws inspiration from David Copperfield with the author placing it squarely in modern America, where the opioid crisis, generational poverty, and weak support systems create a world that many children must learn to survive far too early.
What made this book work for me was Demonβs voice, narrated with a mix of humor, honesty, and observation that makes even the hardest moments feel authentic. I love an author who doesnt soften the realities of their characters. Neglect, hunger, betrayal, and loneliness appear again and again, but Demonβs resilience runs through the entire story. He notices the small things that make life bearable, finds humor when it seems impossible, and keeps moving forward even when the adults around him repeatedly fail him.
The themes in this novel are heavy but important. The author explores how poverty, addiction, and systemic neglect shape childhood, while also showing how identity, loyalty, and survival develop in those same spaces. Reading it often felt uncomfortable in the way honest stories do, because it forces you to think about the children and communities that are too often overlooked.
Even though it has been out for a while, it remains a powerful read that captures both the hardship and the resilience found in lives many people rarely see.
Now maybe I can get a copy of the blue/gold cover, and review some of her newer writing @harperperennial

In Bronco, author Erick S. Gray introduces readers to a Harlem gangster turned WWII soldier who returns home with a supernatural burden: he can see the dead. When the ghost of a young woman murdered by the Klan demands justice, Bronco is pulled into a dangerous investigation that leads him from Harlem to the Deep South.
Even more intriguing, Bronco is part of a larger supernatural universe created by Gray that also includes characters like Gun and Solomon Dark. According to the author, these stories share the same world and their paths will eventually cross.
