CHEESE AND PEAS TOASTIE
I’m the Snack Hacker, demonstrating fast, easy, innovative ideas for tasty bites.
My good friend of many years Mackenzie Crook (who you’ll you’ll have seen in so many things from The Office to Detectorists to Worzel Gummidge) shares his go-to hard-times toasted sandwich, and I add a herb and another state of pea to the mix. Filmed on a snowy day on the South Downs with cameraperson’s fingers gradually getting more and more numb. Fret not, it was all worth it as we hunkered down for a van-based wrap party with a second post-filming sandwich.
INGREDIENTS:
slices of sourdough
slices of a decent strong cheddar
tin mushy peas
handful frozen peas
HP sauce
a few leaves of fresh mint
butter
METHOD:
Fill the sandwich with the cheese, peas (both types), mint, a squirt of sauce and a sprinkling of pepper. Butter the outside generously and carefully place in a frying pan over a medium heat. Put pressure on top either with another pan, or a board with some tins of beans balanced on top. When crisp and golden flip and cook the other side.
AND REMEMBER you can find all my Snack Hacker episodes, FULL SCREEN as well as longer edits of some of them on my YOUTUBE. Just search for George Egg or Snack Hacker.

🇬🇧 MOMENTS IN A UK FIELD /// the meditation of the search. Slowing down, being close to the earth and a sense of discovery. A wonderful Roman coin of Claudius II Gothicus made my day. Big thanks to my fellow team mate @wanderingwiltshire for the opportunity on this land 🙂

Mackenzie Crook reflects on why he’s drawn to portraying awkward, gentle men in his work, and why male loneliness continues to shape his writing.

🌾 Freshly Plowed Fields = Fresh Opportunities!
Did you know that some of the best historical finds are discovered right after a field has been plowed?
🚜 Farming equipment turns over deep layers of soil, bringing hidden coins, relics, and even buried hoards closer to the surface.
That’s why experienced detectorists always keep an eye on freshly worked fields (with the landowner’s permission, of course!).
What was your best field find? 👇

Here is what many countries get wrong about metal detecting:
England chose cooperation over suspicion.
Through the Portable Antiquities Scheme, detectorists can bring their finds to specialists, have them identified, and record their archaeological context. When an object qualifies as Treasure, clear legal rules allow museums to acquire it, while finders and landowners may receive a fair reward.
That incentive matters.
It encourages discoveries to be reported instead of hidden, preserves knowledge for archaeology, and fosters a strong numismatic market
While other countries shamefully treat detectorists like criminals, here, they are heroes.
Heritage is protected best when the public is given a reason to participate.
