How did people have a quiet time before the printing press? LOVE this question! I talk about this a little bit in the first chapter of Stop Calling Me Beautiful, where I discuss the Instagram “quiet time” and how it has impacted our ability to study God’s Word. Today we think we need comfort and coffee to come to Scripture. But for most of church history, all people had were hymns, scraps of Scripture, and a really good memory. Prayer was the focus of devotional time in these days. Sometimes I think we’ve lost something here. Prayer is often tacked onto Bible study like an extra activity, but prayer is where our Bible knowledge is refined and realized! Answering this question made me think - what if I experimented with a “medieval quiet time” for a week? Would it change how I pray? What do you think?
Here are 5 things I do to consistently pray over my kids and help them develop a personal relationship with God: 1. Using the FAMILY PRAYER BOOK has been an absolute game changer. It gives me the exact scripture and words to pray over them daily, and they get daily affirmations for themselves as well. Takes us less than 5 minutes every morning. 2. Have devotional time together. We make use of teens devotional book. One of them reads the devotional for the day and everyone explains their understanding of what was read, and how they think it applies to them. 3. Bible Study. We study a book of the Bible each month or for as long as it lasts. Everyone is expected to read a chapter at bedtime and highlight at least one verse that stood out to them. 4. We go to church together as a family. The boys are very active in church activities, volunteering, attending Bible study and Sunday school. 5. We make use of tons of Bible Resources: memory verse flashcards, Bible quizzes and puzzles, Bible games, Bible worksheets. It’s a fun and visual way to learn the Bible and it sticks! This past Sunday I was in KZN - KwaMashu for the first time , and there I was a nervous wreck coz I felt it wasn’t a great personal devotional week . I’m not sure if I’m the only one who’s felt this way but it made me feel a bit guilty , I knew God was with me regardless but I also understand the importance prioritizing my devotional time with Jesus before stage and letting what I do on stage be an overflow from the secret place . Im saying this all to say, young worship leader you’re not alone , I’m not perfect, sometimes I skip 2/3 days or even a week of my devotional time but it does not make God leave me or be far from me and my ministry , not at all but again I’m not saying it’s okay to procrastinate your time with Jesus in your private space , I’m just trying to free you from condemnation and guilt , and from trying to spend time with Jesus because of the pressure of ministry or the task He has given you but from a place of love for Him and just genuinely beholding Him whether you in the mood or not 🤍. If my word fail me , hear my heart bandla😭😂. Prioritize your time with Jesus , you’re called to Him before you’re called to his people. Spending time with Him helps you know him and his voice better which benefits your ministry . Your discernment is sharper , your obedience is easier , you become an effective child of God when you are intentional about spending Jesus .

@niss.morgan thank you for the brilliant idea of using your nightstand for newborn life!! I can honestly say that my devotional time goes out the window when I’m in the thick of postpartum. I’m doing everything I can to set myself up for success and I don’t know what it is about a new prayer journal but it makes me excited for quiet time. I’m saving it so that I start the day we get home from the hospital so I have something to slowly build a routine around. My biggest prayer this round is that I don’t have my sweet babe in the NICU, if we don’t, that will be the first baby I get to bring home with me right away so I’d love your prayers! The prayer journal I picked is from @tyndalebibles and it pairs with their women’s Bible too! If you need a new one to start the year let me know and I’ll send you the link! It would be so fun to do it together!
