In a recent Dhrupad recital of Raag Kaunsi Kanada, I explored a passage comprising five consecutive iterations of the note Sa, tracing its journey from the Mandra Saptak (lower octave) all the way to the Maha Taar Saptak (fifth octave), also referred to as the Atitama Taar Saptak. This traversal across such an extended vocal range was made possible through the subtle and deliberate use of three distinct modes of nasal resonance—Nasika, Anunasika, and Niranunasika.
