It can be quite disappointing to see bleeding hearts and other ephemerals go into dormancy and die back, which can look unattractive. I planted sun king aralia (one of my favorite plants ever) and toad lily near mine which fill in the space left by bulbs and bleeding hearts. Initially it was a coincidence but when I realized this was happening I planted more bleeding hearts in that same area. What do others plant around yours? It’s great to have other ideas.
The plant name is dicentra .These plants prefer at least partial shade and moist, rich soil. The most common type is called spectabilis, which is what you see here. Note: not all bleeding hearts do this, such as dicentra eximia. I have those too and they are a little less showy but really beautiful.
Location: client’s house (as always videos are done by clients and this was done by Mim); and my house

A quick reshuffle trying to add some lime green foliage and a bit more flowering. Still a bed that is pure foliage really from summer on but I don’t mind. I love this process of thinking changing and improving. It won’t turn out anywhere near how imagine but looking back at some moments this year I’m quite pleased with how sumptuous it worked out. Thinking about which elements I liked both in terms of flower and foliage and trying to extend or add to them and Trying to link this bed with the quite rich bright colours of tbt other beds around it so it’s fun to find shade plants that give the same vibe or plants which i can use in sun and shade. I’m getting excited for spring already!

So smol 🥲. I grew this tiny Bleeding heart plant from an itty bitty root. It was a teeny root in a bag purchased from Walmart in the spring. I am expecting it to be much bigger next year 😆

🌿 Shade Doesn’t Mean Dull – Look at these Glorious plants! 🌿
Here’s a sneak peek at this week’s 5 Minute Friday video – and it’s all about bringing colour, texture, and vibrancy to the shadier corners of your garden or patio 🌳✨
In this container, we’ve combined some of our favourite shade-loving plants that not only thrive without direct sun but also add dramatic foliage and seasonal flair:
🪴 Coleus – With its bold, velvety foliage in fiery tones, coleus steals the show even without a single bloom. It’s the perfect way to inject instant colour into low-light spots.
🪴 Heuchera – Also known as Coral Bells, this beauty offers deeply coloured leaves in purples, silvers, or lime greens. Great for contrast and year-round structure.
🪴 Dicentra (Bleeding Heart) – Delicate, romantic, and soft, dicentra adds charm and elegance with its graceful, arching stems and heart-shaped flowers.
🪴 Astilbe – The feathery plumes of astilbe add movement and texture, flowering beautifully in moist, shady spaces. It’s like adding fireworks to your foliage!
🌦️ Whether your containers live on a shady patio, under a tree, or in a covered corner, this combination proves that shade can be just as stunning as sun – if not more so.
🎥 Hit play to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how we’ve styled this one – and don’t miss the full video this Friday where we talk through care tips, positioning, and design tricks to help your shade planters flourish.

Serduszka okazała ‚Gold Heart’ Dicentra spectabilis
Roślina, która kwitnie w cieniu i półcieniu.
Polecam z całego serca szczególnie do miejsc z deficytem swiatła, idealna pod korony drzew.
U mnie rośnie pod brzozą Doorenbos, wiec dodatkowo ma ograniczone zasoby wody, a radzi sobie idealnie. Z roku na rok zwiększa swoją objętość i daje coraz więcej różowych serduszek 🩷🩷🩷
Uwielbiam jej limonkowe liście, dla mnie kontrast idealny 💚🩷

Bleeding hearts. Lamprocapnos spectabilis. A lovely woodland lander with peculiar heart like flowers.. From China, Korea and Siberia this one is really for the cool woodland garden. #springgarden #dicentra #lamprocapnosspectabilis #rareplants #horticulture
My Lamprocapnos spectabilis has taken off in the last week, including all the divisions I made. I have one clump that's now 4ft tall. Definitely a spectacular shady performer for April when everything else just thinking about putting on a show, it's got its glad rags on and is thinking about an encore 😂💗💃#dicentra #shadegardening #flowerphotography #gardening
The flowers on these are just stunning, so intricate …. I grew both of these from cuttings … Dicentra (bleeding heart) is such an easy plant to grow … flowers for weeks and usually flowers again later in the summer 🪴 🌺 #bleedingheart #springflowers🌸 #dicentra
