Be mindful when swimming during jellyfish season, or don’t swim at all. 3. Protect yourself by wearing a wet suit, a protective suit, or jellyfish repellent. 4. Know how to spot a jellyfish. First-aid (what to do when you get stung): 1. Disarm the nematocysts (stingers off the jellyfish): vinegar or baking soda paste (baking soda + water) 2. Carefully remove tentacles with tweezers or scrape off with shaving cream + razor/plastic card 3. Soak in hot water (43-45C) for pain relief 4. Apply mild topical steroid 5. Take pain relievers as needed 6. For more severe symptoms (eg, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, muscle ache, abdominal pain, seizures, vomiting, etc.), bring patient immediately to nearest health facility. Steps that are unhelpful or NOT proven to be helpful : * Rinsing with human urine * Rinsing with cold, fresh water * Applying meat tenderizer * Applying alcohol, ethanol, or ammonia * Rubbing with a towel * Applying pressure bandages Jellyfish stings may lead to more complications such as presence of blisters, secondary bacterial infection, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or scarring.
