it’s here. a community for disabled creatives. after fighting my place in the disabled community for most of my life, something magical happened. i walked into a room with 50 other disabled women. and my anxiety dissipated. and turned to… ease. i suddenly realized: these weren’t the kind of friendships i was scared of growing up, they were the ones I’d been waiting for. i thought – how could I recreate this feeling? so i’ve spent the last year saying yes. to every gathering i could host, attend or be involved in that brought disabled community together. and the more i hosted, the more people started asking “where can we sign up for these events?” it made me realize, it isn’t just me that needs this kind of community. it’s so much bigger. so i listened. and sat. and got to work. and Disabled& was born. Disabled& hosts community-driven events made for us. whether it’s sharing an intimate dinner with new friends, swapping insight with fellow entrepreneurs, or mentoring the youngest members of the Disabled& community, i’m excited to save you a seat. xx april link in bio to join us 🧡 #disabilityawareness #disabilitypridemonth #community #representationmatters #limbdifference #inclusivity #storytime
Well meaning people say these things- and truly do not see what they are implying when they say it. Listen, educate yourself, and once you know better, do better. Happy valentines ❤️ Not a hero because I am not a burden!🌈💜 It took me a long time to actually believe that - this was NOT an overnight process! My partner has never made me feel like a burden but I would often put that feeling on myself. It’s often what I’d be told by the media! After I found the Disabled community and listened to other people I learnt that my disability isn’t anything to be ashamed of at all and that although my relationship might look a bit different to a non disabled persons, it doesn’t mean I don’t give and bring amazing things to the table. I’m also very aware that I am very lucky and privileged to be able to get married as many Disabled people are not able to due to losing benefits. There is a in-depth post about this further down on my page! But I also think it’s important to share Disabled joy too! Disabled people make amazing partners and you are lucky to date us hehe 😘😘 Dress: @selkie Content: @themysteryguestuk Veil: @kitandthebobbin Cane: @coolcrutches (gifted - AD, no monetary exchange) #Access: video description: Video begins we see Eliza and Michael on their wedding day kissing, Eliza is a White fem wheelchair user with rainbow hair, Michael is a White masc person with brown shoulder length hair eliza is wearing a big rainbow dress and sequin veil and Michael is wearing a grey suit with a pink and yellow waistcoat, there is text that reads ‘My partner shouldn’t be seen as ‘amazing’ or a hero for marrying me as a Disabled person…’ we then see Eliza and Michael walking together and Michael is holding Eliza’s dress and veil so it doesn’t get caught. I never see this piece of equipment talked about in the disabled community. And I don't understand why! We have used this and loved it for probably three years. She's always either in the sitting position or standing so this is such a nice break for her. It supports her body weight almost fully, so she is able to move her legs and work on strengthening her arms! The frame itself is light weight, which is almost unheard of for adaptive equipment! This makes it easy for her to move it, which is incredible! It's not pretty getting her in and out of, but it's worth it! #cerebralpalsy #cerebralpalsyawareness #disabled #adaptiveequipment #adaptiveseating #disabilityawareness #kidsofinstgram #specialneedsmom #specialneedskids #disabled #physicaltherapy #intensivetherapy #newreels #trending #momsofdisabledchildren #mnmom
What is disabled joy? It is the joy of feeling seen, included & accommodated. It is the joy of friends that have made the effort to learn about you & your disability. The joy of celebrating every small step & small win. The joy of a day with more energy, the joy of being able to exercise more, to have the energy to shower. It is the joy of meeting someone with the same special interest as you, & the all-consuming conversation & infodump that follows. It is accepting your disabled identity & being welcomed into the disabled community.
Ableism is real. And, we in a disabled community face it every single day of our lives. Ableism isn’t always intentional often times, it’s the exact opposite. Ableism is so deeply rooted in our society, it’s systematic. #Accessibility: I am sitting with my sunglasses on, and my blanket outside in the sun. I am trying to stay calm until I experience more ableism. At that point, I put my sunglasses down and give a very disturbed and confused look. The text on screen says, “Trying to live my disabled life in peace… and then… ABLEISM.” #Ableism #Ableist #Discrimination #Disabled #Disability #DisabledCommunity #DisabilityInclusion #Accommodation #Accessibility #SystematicAbleism #TimeToGrow
Brining back this video because 35 years ago the ADA was passed and was a huge win for the disabled community. However, 3 decades later and companies, restaurants, stores are still doing the bare minimum to stay compliant instead of opting for true accessibility. They also currently working to dismantle these laws that require equity. The ADA is the floor, not the ceiling and there is still so much work to be done to ensure this world is accessible regardless of your function.
The response and love that I have received over the past few days from you all has been so overwhelming and I can't thank you enough! As I mentioned previously my biggest fear was letting the disabled community down and having my platforms not feel like a safe space. But you have all been so understanding and empathic I had a little cry - and called my dad because that's what I always seem to do haha! After going over the events that occurred and listening to Kate and Lucy retell the story I'm remembering so much more frustrating situations that happened and it makes me so angry. I appreciate other disabled people have different opinions about the documentary title, who are my friends, and they think it's okay. Not every disabled person has the same opinion and that's okay. But I always believe it's best to go with the majority especially those talk about ableism on the daily and educate others for a living. So again thank you for your love and support it's appreciated more than you know x Shirt and shorts co-ord - @prettylittlething #ootd #everybodyinplt #ableism #disabledlife #disabledmodel #disabledinfluencer
the disabled community saved me 💛 I grew up as an undiagnosed autistic person and then developed chronic illnesses as a teenager but even before my physical health deteriorated, I still never felt like I fit in. I spent the first 18 years of my life thinking that I “just wasn’t made to have proper friendships” and that I’d never find someone I could truly be myself with ❤️‍🩹 But after my autism diagnosis, it really opened up a brand-new world to me and showed me that I am normal… but in a neurodivergent way! And finding the chronic illness community has given me friendships where people understand that I can’t keep up when my energy is low. They understand that I need to take breaks and that I can’t go out partying or socialising every day like a lot of people my age ❤️ I really love the people I have around me and I think it’s the first time in my life I’ve ever been truly happy :) And I have the internet to thank for that 🫶🏻 #neurodivergent #disabledcommunity #disability #disabled #acceptance #youarenotalone #selflove #mentalhealth #autismoftiktok #autistic #autisticadult #latediagnosedautistic #chronicillness #chronicillnessawareness #disabledandproud

Adaptive, disability inclusive or sensory friendly does not mean it’s ONLY for the disabled community. It means we design WITH our community to make clothing that’s better for EVERY BODY! Sure we have pieces like our wheelchair coats that are a bit more specific but our clothing can be worn by anybody. This is also why we are working to expand our sizing and offering with sizes xs-xxxl and new styles coming soon! Trust me, all these things have been asked or commented before and we always do our best to educate but some people don’t want to listen 🫣 Hanan, a white woman with blonde hair wearing a pink top explains how adaptive clothing can be worn by anybody. #adaptivefashion #adaptiveclothing #disabledfashion #inclusiveFashion #WheelchairUser #SensoryFriendly
