What's your favorite piece of jewelry? (*❛‿❛)
I often forget about rings or bracelets because I rarely wear them. My characters usually have earrings or necklaces as a result. (･ัω･ั)
But Ailing doesn't have any! I thought that a woman raised by monks would be a bit more ascetic & eschew shiniest. Usually.
I imagine this woven tassel was made by one of her nun mums before she decided to explore the world & find medicine for immortality. And since she is no longer a practicing ascetic, she's ok to have some sparkle. (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*.✧
Anyways! My cursory research also indicated that turtles and deer are animals that represent good health & longevity.
And though turtles work well for other nature aligned characters, since the conceit of her character is to appear like a ranger or druid, a more forested animal suited. ᕦʕ •ᴥ•ʔᕤ
The knots are both different butterfly knots that I saw. It's partially because it's pretty.
Butterflies can also represent souls or rebirth. (Think Psyche in Greek myths.) ←(>▽<)ﾉ
But as the butterfly also can represent rebirth & the impermanence of life on Buddhist teachings, it also works as a sort of caution for Ailing. The cycle will continue even as she fights to keep it stationary, serving as tension in her motivations. (◠‿◕)
I'm doing more research into Daoist philosophy as it's the main one I was curious about while working on Ailing, and I'm going to enjoy the conflict between what she wants and what she's believed. >=}
Anyways!! Hope y'all enjoy the sketchbook idea! (~‾▿‾)~
