You might be wondering why I’m hand watering when I have a fully automated drip system…
Drip irrigation is amazing for established plants, but freshly sown seeds need moisture right at the surface.
A quick hand watering helps reach all the seeds sowed at the surface (top couple inches) of the soil.

Your irrigation sucks.
Yeah… I said it.
Most raised bed watering systems:
❌ Clog
❌ Water unevenly
❌ Break down after a season
❌ Waste water
❌ Leave dry spots
Terrible products like:
Garden Grid.
Micro tubing with built-in emitters.
Sprayers.
I’ve installed, fixed, and replaced all of them.
In this video I show the system I have using without need for replacement for the last 8 years.
If you’re serious about growing abundant vegetables in the deseet, irrigation is everything.
The right system changes your entire garden.

Most people assume gardening takes hours every day, but once everything is established my garden really only takes about 1 hour a week to maintain. I’m a mom to 3 littles ages 5 and under and if I can do it, you absolutely can too! 💙
The biggest secret is drip irrigation. It waters everything automatically so the weekly upkeep stays really manageable. Irrigation took us about an hour to set up and cost about $100 and that was 4 years ago and it’s still going strong!
Stay tuned because I’m sharing exactly how I set up my drip irrigation system for my raised beds.

Getting watering right is tricky. But I know my beds are getting watered evenly because I use Garden Grids™ from @garden_in_minutes I know how long it takes for me (12 minutes! ) to water to a depth of 12 -18 inches. That's how long I run my garden watering system each time I water. (It might be different for you. )Throughout the year, my watering frequency changes as I adapt to cooler or warmer temperatures.
The best way to tell if your soil needs water is to dig down and check! Questions about these Garden Grids™ or want to learn more? Comment SEND for my direct link to shop and a guide to watering raised beds that explains these principles in more detail.

If you’re planning on starting a garden in an arid region, these are some of the things we consider to be best practices for wise water usage.
1️⃣ Keeping your soil covered with 1-2 inches of mulch. Our preferred mulch is alfalfa-free straw, or cedar pet bedding, but any mulch is 💯 better than no mulch. Mulch will keep moisture in the soil and it’s critical for protecting the soil.
2️⃣ Drip irrigation - we use drip line throughout the garden because drip irrigation delivers water at the soil level, minimizing evaporation. We made our own drip system with supplies from Drip Depot but you can also purchase supplies and soaker hoses at big box stores. Our drip system runs on a timer and has a rain sensor that shuts off the system if we get enough moisture.
3️⃣ Watering deeply - plants will always need more frequent watering as they get adjusted, but watering more deeply and less frequently can encourage deeper root development, making plants more resilient.
4️⃣ Ollas - these terracotta pots are brilliant - simply place them in the ground, fill with water, cover, periodically check the water level, and refill as needed. We got ours from a pottery store in New Mexico, but there are companies that sell them online. It’s also possible to make your own out of terracotta planters (there are great tutorials online). These can be used in combination with drip irrigation.
5️⃣ not mentioned here, but using shade cloth is another thing we frequently do to help keep our garden watered, especially as transplants are getting settled. Shade cloth can keep things from drying out and getting wilty during the hottest part of the day.
It’s impossible to cover all of these important topics in a two minute video, so check the drought highlight on our page if you want more detailed information.
