Today I got to play around with a new medium - drypoint etching! My first prints are far from perfect, but I'm falling in love with the process. Each stroke of ink I add or wipe away makes the art feel like it's living, changing before my eyes. I feel like I'm a few experiments away from getting this new technique nailed down! Have you ever heard of drypoint etching?

They’re here safely; it’s such a relief! These dry point etchings are from the first week of my time in Spain at the @artprintresidence . Shaped by the landscapes I walk at home and yet made in another place; they are reminders of the overlooked beauty of the hedgerows and the power of these spaces. Only yesterday, I walked in Two Tree Island, a nature reserve close to my studio, I had to pinch myself- to be surrounded by the hedgerows and all the wildlife they support. Check out Sunni Ann Thompson @sunnimockingbird printing a drypoint. Sunni says, I had to dig deep, pull out the baby press and go for a drypoint etching! It’s been a while and have only done this a few times. Everytime I love the results and wonder why I don’t do it more. This is a process of making a print by scratching into a surface with a sharp or hard needle pen. It’s inked and then pressed. As I don’t have a press I thought I’d try using my very old pasta maker to have a go at drypoint etching. It took a while to get started as I haven’t done any intaglio printmaking for a long time…but the results were better than I expected - I was very surprised! Have you tried this? Any tips? A little Wood Mouse etching I love this little mouse with its large ears and dark brown eyes and often see them eating the seedheads in my garden.
