Drystone walling. An age old skill which hasn’t changed much in hundreds of years. But a crucial one to have for farming in the Yorkshire Dales.
There are said to be 5000 miles of drystone walls in the Yorkshire Dales alone, a dominant and iconic feature crisscrossing the landscape. Our farm contributes to 13 miles, which date back hundreds of years to the late 1700s and early 1800s. Although we have some examples of historic walling which dates back even further than that.
Maintaining drystone walls is an essential skill to keep our stock from straying and a well built wall can last hundreds of years with little maintenance. While fencing is a popular alternative to traditional dry stone walls in terms of cost and speed of erection. The cost of drystone walls can be offset against the sturdiness and long + low maintenance lifetimes.
As well as keeping the stock in, the walls provide shelter for both livestock and wild animals. Providing a microclimate for flora and fauna to thrive.

Finished with one hour to spare. I’ll post some more pics soon, but until then, here’s the cemetery sanctuary we constructed out in California. Thank you John Scott for the referral and a massive thank you to the crew that made it happen! @greenislandstonework @newenglandlandartisan @bullockstonework and Dan Pearl.
We were handed a pic of what they wanted built, and we nailed it. I couldn’t be more proud of the team, and I look forward to the next away game!!

Ancient Builders Used A Genius Stone Method 🤯
Ancient builders used a genius method to create massive stone structures that could last for centuries without a single drop of cement.
Even though it looks like they’re just stacking rocks, this technique is called dry stone construction. Each stone is precisely shaped to fit together like a puzzle, and the heavy weight creates a strong downward force that locks everything in place.
Because the stones are carefully balanced through their unique shapes, they don’t need mortar or binders to stay stable — which is why many of these massive monuments are still standing today.

Throwback to when I had just finished teaching a dry stone walling lesson live on my channel. This mini dry stone wall I developed gets used all year round to teach people the basics of dry stone walling.

Down Carolina way cutting big granite for @devaneystoneworks - We’re building a drystone bridge out in the woods on an incredible hunting property.
@marginedmallet @stonebearmason Stew and I are gathering the material needed to start the building process, which involves splitting massive quarry blocks and leftovers from years past at this abandoned quarry you see here and shaping them to our needs. We figure we’ll need about 100 tons of granite…. This one’s going to special …

Restoration of a drystone wall at Sand Lodge, Sandwick, Shetland, linking the geological and mining history of the area in terms of the extraction of copper in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Living history, a rare monologue and an indisputable sartorial disaster…

This Dry-Stone wall has some serious old age character to it. It sits on the coast of north Cornwall next to an old church. It’s one of my favourite combinations of stone and vegetation with so much going on. I’ve already tried recreating it with XPS and it’s seriously challengin. #oldwall #oldstone #weatheredwalls #wallplants #cornwall #drystone #drystonewall #cornishwalls #cornwallcoast
@c.o.i.stonework extends a drystone retaining wall, carefully stacking each piece so it locks together naturally.

Shaping a shitty rock into a usable stone for a course in the cheek wall.
We each have our preference for which hammers and chisels we use to shape the rock. In this video I’m using a carbide hand chisel and chipper for this semi-quartzitic sandstone.
(This is the ongoing project for Sam’s clients @iamsamwisej in Durango, Colorado.)

“The Fahan beehive huts are a collection of ancient, drystone structures on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland, located along the Slea Head Drive. These conical huts, also known as clocháns, were built using a drystone corbelling technique and served as dwellings for a community that dates back potentially to the Neolithic period.” - the Stone Age!
