You'll be able to hear the difference even if you're a total beginner if you just keep this logic in mind and play with the attack knob. Not complicated at all

Fast metal sections create a hidden problem:
kick drums start stacking low-end energy.
When the tempo increases, the next kick arrives before the previous one fully decays, and the low end begins to pile up.
That’s when your mix starts to lose clarity.
One way I control this is with kick compression:
• a fast attack to control the low-end spikes
• but not the fastest attack, so the initial punch survives
• a release timed so the compressor resets before the next kick hit
This keeps the kick tight and controlled, even in fast sections.
In this clip I show how I set up compression on the kick to prevent low-end buildup.

If you over boost this narrow band you're solving a problem that was created by this boost itself. Completely useless. Not a problem that actually existed in the original sound.
Boost it moderately until it find the offending frequency and then only cut it gently. That's good enough to solve this issue
You have to be very intentional while using EQ because it's easy to mess up a sound with it. Subtle move. Huge difference. 👇
This is a great way to keep your drums sounding natural and create a sense of realism in your mix. Use what your room and overhead mics already gave you and emphasize it — that’s the philosophy behind this CLA approach to drum reverb
Once I started approaching reverb like this, my drums started sounding way more cohesive

You won't understand why the attack / release knobs in the multiband compressor are so effective until you actually try this.
If you want to fix certain frequency clashes, or make subtle frequency adjustments, always go for a dynamic EQ.
But if you're looking to shape an entire range and make it react with the most accuracy, believe me multiband compressor is a God send

Parallel compression can be a great way to improve the sustain and body of your drums, while also still retaining the powerful transients and dynamics from the original recordings/sounds 🥁
