One of those times in spring when he actually came out. Common yellowthroats are famous for being heard, not seen. They stay deep in dense vegetation such as marshes, wetlands, reed beds- skulking around being secretive. But during breeding season, males occasionally emerge to sing their distinctive ‘witchity-witchity-witchity’ song from an exposed perch. This is their territorial declaration.

The Common Yellowthroat is a small songbird with a yellow throat. The male is easiest to identify, with a distinctive black mask and a whitish band separating the mask from the crown and nape. The bird has a round tail, a round belly, and yellow undertail coverts. The small, slender, and sharply pointed black beak is tailored for specialized foraging. Common Yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas), Jackrabbit Trail on River Road, Lake Placid NY (26 May 2025).
