Skiing Hakuba, Japan 🇯🇵⛷️ Hakuba is huge, it’s actually a whole valley made up of 10 ski resorts, which is one of the reasons it’s an incredibly popular ski area. The snow was amazing everywhere, but getting around the valley was a bit of a pain. Buses were infrequent, there wants enough of them, they were packed, and it took ages to get to most resorts. I would defo consider hiring a car next time. We stayed in Echoland in a hostel (£140 for a family room of 4), and this area was perfect with all the bars and restaurants nearby but I’d probably stay in Happo next time. Here’s a quick breakdown of the 10 Hakuba resorts: Happo One – Biggest & most famous, with long runs and a proper mountain feel. Tsugaike Kogen – Best for families, plus amazing ungroomed tree runs - loved the all round vibes here. Goryu – Great variety, especially for intermediate skiers. Iwatake – Beautiful views and lots of fun cruising terrain. Cortina – Our favourite ski day. Steep, ungroomed runs and proper mountain terrain. Norikura – Tiny, quiet, and perfect for a relaxed day. Happo Banks – Small, fun, and easy to fit into a mixed day. Kashimayari – Great for families and beginners, super relaxed vibe. Hakuba 47 – Great freestyle terrain and a lively atmosphere. Sanosaka – A smaller, quieter option with nice wide runs. I will assume that you are flying into TOKYO instead of Sapporo or Osaka for this trip. The other destinations are amazing as well but this trip will work out of Tokyo itself. Our first destination will be Hakuba. This is a very reliable, developed and western resort area. Don’t let that fool you though! The powder is world class! And the area is BIG. Depending on what time you arrive into Tokyo you may be able to take a highway bus straight from the airport to Hakuba, this is very common and people arrive all the time throughout the day (the latest I arrived was 2am!) https://naganosnowshuttle.com/ this website is easy to book with and I used used them in the past (no affiliation) If you want to wait an extra day OR are keen to try the shinkansen you can catch one directly from tokyo main station to nagano then onto hakuba train station OR catch a transfer bus from Nagona train station to Hakuba Bus: 4-5hours Train+bus: 5-7 hours DAY 2: Time to ski Hakuba! The areas of Happo, goryo and 47 are great for everyone. They are also the most kid friendly if you are travelling with the kids and easiest to transfer to with the free buses run by the hills. The following hills are all local to the Hakuba area so feel free to explore using the valley pass, or just buy daily tickets as you feel 1. Happo-One 2. Hakuba Goryu 3. Hakuba 47 4.
