Kate Barr, or as you know her online as EduKate, has been quickly gaining traction as one of the city’s most-watched street food reviewers. Her unrehearsed and spontaneous reactions to foods she’s never tried before have been welcomed by both local and international viewers. Usually, her viewership falls into three main categories: those who miss nostalgic Hong Kong street food, those who are curious about the various local snacks or food, and those who are infuriated by her method of reviewing food. Barr’s contract as a teacher started earlier this year, when she first got acquainted with the city in the Eastern district. From there, she eventually moved to Wan Chai, where she better fleshed out her review style to become what it is today. Her videos on Instagram cover the basics, like where you can find the food, the price, and her genuine reaction and thoughts on it. What has won viewers over is her eagerness to learn, not only about the food, but also about the people who are involved with making the food and the vendors. While her innocent approach to learning about local cuisines and snacks has been entertaining to watch, it has at times also gotten her into trouble (if you have been following her, you know what we mean). Her social media mainly focuses on food from the places she’s visiting, while her YouTube channel goes over more personal topics in long form, discussing neurodiversity, her personal experiences growing up in Scotland, and how supper time once gave her crippling anxiety as a child (which is why trying new foods is the best form of exposure therapy for her). With only a few months left until she says goodbye to Hong Kong and begins her next challenge, which involves walking back to Scotland, we caught up with Kate for 27 Questions.
