Great Egrets…☀️
Looking like tiny dinosaurs, Great Egret chicks reach up and grab the sleepy parent’s bill hoping to be fed. This was one of my favorite nests to photograph in the wetlands, the chicks were so animated! Filmed with my Nikon Z9 and NIKKOR Z 600mm f/4 TC lens.

One of the craziest feeding frenzies I’ve ever seen. So many species. Reddish egrets (including white morph and 9 at one time that I counted) tricolored herons, little blue herons, great blue and great white heron (white morph of a great blue) spoonbills, black skimmers, snow and great egrets and much more!
Medium Egret - Bird of the Day 210
Found throughout Asia
"A stocky egret that is larger than Eastern Cattle and Little Egrets, but smaller than the Great Egret. Often confusing and difficult to identify, this bird is truly intermediate between potential confusion species. Things to look for include a yellow bill that is shorter than Great Egret but longer than Eastern Cattle Egret, a relatively rounded head, and shorter legs than Great Egret, approaching Eastern Cattle Egret. Like most egret species, associates with all types of water bodies including wet fields, often flocking with other egrets."

This fledgling season, Oakland Zoo’s Heron Rescue Team treated 62 black-crowned night herons and egrets at our vet hospital. We are proud to be Taking Action to protect the official bird of Oakland!
I always catch myself out and get surprised when I really stop and pay close attention to the wildlife and ecoysystems I find myself in.
These egrets are the perfect example…
I see them everywhere, all the time and somewhat take them for granted I suppose. It wasn’t until I really stopped and filmed them that I learnt so much more about them and their lives! They’re not just the white birds we typically see walking around the creeks and rivers! There’s so much more to them…
This is the plumed egret - Ardea plumifera
They get this vivid bright green face during the breeding season and ofcourse, as the name suggests, beautiful plumes of feathers down their backs of which they use to woo the ladies!
I’ve also never seen this little dance before so I was pleasantly surprised 😂
I think this is why I love filming wildlife and sharing these little clips. There’s always something cool or interesting happening in the lives of the animals around us and I just find it all so fascinating…

Great Egrets…☀️
A Great Egret chick has locked on the target and isn’t letting go, as he tries to extract a morsel of food from the parent’s bill. Watching their persistence is always entertaining. Great Egret chicks are incredibly persistent and full of energy and determination, qualities that help them thrive while growing up in the heart of the wetlands. Filmed with my Nikon Z9 and NIKKOR Z 600mm f/4 TC lens.

If you’ve visited South Florida, then you have likely seen an egret. But have you heard of a cattle egret?
Cattle egrets in South Florida are often seen hanging out with cows because they feed on insects stirred up by the animals as they graze. These birds benefit from the cows’ movement, making it easier to catch bugs like grasshoppers and flies.
This is called a symbiotic relationship; a perfect partnership where the egrets get a meal, and the cows don’t have as many pests flying around them!
Visit the Aviary on the Vista level to see these iconic birds for yourself!

Cattle egrets change from being one of the most plain looking birds to one of the most beautiful with their spring plumage transformation
Wandering in wonder!
Featured here is a breathtaking scene showcasing elephants, starlings, and egrets with Mount Kilimanjaro in background.
#DidYouKnow: Elephants, known as ecosystem engineers, bring necessary changes to their habitat. During dry seasons, they use their tusks to dig up dry riverbeds, creating watering holes for surrounding animals. Additionally, as they uproot trees while feeding, they create pathways and space for smaller animals.

Cattle egrets love to follow big mammals like elephants, giraffes and hippos for “free meals”. The big mammals’ big steps stir up insects that the birds eat. Cattle egrets can also sometimes ride on the backs of the animals to pick at ticks and other parasites, and will sometimes warn the mammals if they see a predator.
Isn’t nature amazing?
