When we first met Saree, she was living a hard life her owner was using her for street begging. She was extremely thin, sick, and suffering from a variety of health problems.
When we rescued her, we knew the road ahead would not be easy. Saree needed not only physical treatment but also time, patience, and care to heal emotionally. Her trauma ran deep.
Today, she is no longer alone. Saree has a best friend named Pen Boon, who also once begged on the streets before being sent to work as a tourist riding elephant in southern Thailand.
The moment they met at Elephant Nature Park, something beautiful happened they bonded instantly. Since then, they’ve been inseparable: they sleep in the same shelter, eat together, and if one loses sight of the other in the grasslands, you’ll hear them calling out and running to reunite.
Every day, we witness their joy.
Saree runs ahead, with Pen Boon right behind her.
They are like children again free to run, free to play, free to live.
This is what healing looks like.
This is the power of friendship, freedom, and love.

There are elephants, there are super tuskers and then…. There are legends like Teejay. 🐘
Coming face to face with this iconic giant of Amboseli was an experience unlike any other. Massive, imposing and carrying a presence that demanded respect, he seemed to dwarf everything around him.
What immediately caught my attention were his tusks. Long, seemingly endless and almost perfect, they were every bit as impressive as the giant carrying them.
And Teejay knew exactly what he was carrying. More than once, he deliberately lifted and displayed those magnificent tusks, as if reminding everyone around him who he was.
What made the encounter even more special was that Teejay was in musth, a period when bull elephants experience a surge in testosterone and can become highly unpredictable. It’s a time when they command even greater respect from every creature around them.
This was my first truly close encounter with a mature bull elephant and what an introduction it was.
His immense size, towering presence, and the confidence of a bull in his prime made for an unforgettable sight. Some animals command attention. Teejay demanded it.
Without a doubt, one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters I’ve ever had.

Even in the strongest elephant families, there are moments of conflict.
Baby was feeling especially playful today and kept pushing boundaries with her mother. We had been observing the interaction for quite some time, and it seemed same as usual. As caretakers, we always allow elephants to communicate and behave naturally, stepping in only if an animal’s safety is genuinely at risk.
Then, in a moment I happened to capture on video, her mother delivered a firm correction. Ironically, it wasn’t only the calf who got injured even mom ended up breaking her own tusk.
Why do elephants do this?
Mother elephants play a crucial role in teaching calves boundaries, social behavior, and respect within the herd. These corrections can sometimes appear harsh to us, but they are a normal part of elephant communication and calf development. Just as human parents guide their children, elephant mothers guide their young in ways that help them grow into confident and socially aware adults.
Both mom and baby are doing well, and today served as a reminder that life in an elephant family is filled with lessons, patience, and sometimes unexpected outcomes.

They are famous for their exceptional memories and deep emotional capacities, exhibiting behaviors like mourning their dead, showing empathy, and using tools. As "ecosystem engineers," elephants play a critical role in their habitats by creating clearings in forests and digging for water, which benefits numerous other species; however, they face significant threats today from habitat loss and poaching for their ivory tusks.
