On this day 105 years ago, the LSO premiered Elgar's Cello Concerto🎶 For the opening concert of the 1919/20 season the Orchestra had put together a programme that included #Elgar's new work. On rehearsal day itself, conductor Albert Coates spent much more than his allotted time rehearsing the rest of the programme leaving very little time for Elgar and Felix Salmond to run through the new work with the Orchestra. The concert was such a disaster that the Concerto was not heard in London again for over a year. However there is of course a happy ending to the story as in the 1960s the recording made by the 20-year-old Jacqueline Du Pré with the LSO captured the hearts of listeners everywhere and became a firm favourite, where it remains today. Ahead of his own performance of the Concerto in December, Principal Cello David Cohen gives us a taste of what's to come. 😉 #LondonSymphonyOrchestra #Cello
