🔥🧠 If someone’s brain was on fire... would you know the signs?
🔥 Think brain in FLAMES 🧠 Think encephalitis
I’m really proud to be partnering with the charity @EncephalitisInternational for World Encephalitis Day (22 Feb).
Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain - and it can become life‑threatening fast.
According to Encephalitis International, it affects three people every minute globally, yet 77% of people don’t know what it is, leading to delays in diagnosis and poorer outcomes.
That’s why the new acronym FLAMES matters.
It highlights the urgent symptoms seen in both infectious and autoimmune encephalitis:
Flu‑like symptoms,
Loss of consciousness,
Acute headache,
Memory problems,
Emotional or behavioural changes,
Seizures.
Early recognition saves lives - and anyone, anywhere, at any age can be affected.
🔥 Share FLAMES. Help someone recognise the signs. You could save a life.

Today is World Encephalitis Day 🧠 This is my story
Twelve years ago, I was asked to share my story on one of the biggest shows in the world. I was nervous and unsure whether it was the right thing to do, because I had never spoken about it before.
I spoke about my encephalitis journey — an inflammation of the brain.
At the time, I couldn’t speak, read, write, or walk. I had just completed my first year at university and had been given the leading role in the university opera when I was diagnosed.
Returning to normal life was a slow process. It required patience, persistence, and faith.
But music never left me. It was always there, quietly supporting me and helping me move forward. The power of music is undeniably magical — a gift from above that carried me when I needed it most.
Today, I receive so many kind and inspiring messages from around the world. I’m truly grateful. If sharing my experience can give strength or hope to someone going through their own journey, then it was worth speaking about it 🙏 #encephalitis #bringmetolife #britainsgottalent #braininflames

February 22nd is World Encephalitis Day - the biggest day of the year for people whose lives have been affected by inflammation of the brain. Since its launch in 2014, World Encephalitis Day has reached 628 million people globally in an effort to raise awareness of encephalitis. Here is a bit of my story & encouragement to those whose lives have been forever changed by this condition. @encephalitisinternational

Brain Inflammation Gave Me Seizures
Evie was a healthy young gymnast as a child, but her life took a dramatic turn as a teen. She experienced tics, seizures and periods of partial paralysis - all misdiagnosed. Now, Evie's on the journey to recovery and she's raising awareness to support others fighting similar health conditions.

“For the first ten years of her life, Nicole was an active, happy, outgoing child. She was the life of the party, and suddenly she became inconsolable. When I asked her what was wrong, she said ‘I don’t feel like myself, I don’t know what’s wrong with me. My body is not processing.’ I said, ‘What do you mean by that?’ and she said, ‘I don’t know. I think I’m dying.’ - Vivienne, Nicole’s Mom
With no pre-existing conditions, Nicole lost her ability to speak and started acting out of character. She was crying uncontrollably, having panic attacks and was declining physically, mentally and emotionally. As a former healthcare worker at Memorial Hospital Miramar, her mother Vivienne knew something wasn’t right.
Vivienne immediately brought her to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, where Nicole was diagnosed with Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system essentially attacks the brain. This condition, often called a brain inflammation, can cause long-term health issues and even death, if not diagnosed and treated early on.
Nicole was hospitalized and under our care for several weeks. She suffered from two grand mal seizures, causing her to lose consciousness, and at one point she became completely catatonic. Now, nearly one year later, with the help of Dr. Areeba Basit and her multidisciplinary neurology team, along with months of physical, occupational and speech therapy, Nicole has learned to walk, talk, eat, and even dress herself again. Mom says that because of early intervention, Nicole is 95% better.

On 22nd February it is World Encephalitis day, and I’ve teamed up with @encephalitisinternational to share their latest FLAMES campaign to help you understand the symptoms and signs of encephalitis that little bit more.
This is something extremely close to my heart due to falling extremely ill in 2013 and almost losing my own life to this life-threatening illness which so many haven’t even heard of, let alone know what to look out for. Thankfully I made a full recovery and I’ll be sharing more on my YouTube channel with a longer video later this week.
In the meantime, please do share this video and help us raise awareness!
Thank you 🙏🏼 ❤️🔥
