🍅 Ever wondered why some tomatoes grow so big, healthy and beautiful? It often comes down to the soil. Healthy soil helps plants develop stronger roots, better growth and more abundant harvests. One natural way to improve soil fertility is insect frass pellets. They slowly release nutrients and support beneficial microorganisms in the soil. Just sprinkle the pellets around the plant and water. Simple, natural support for your garden. 🌱 Starting early in the season can help plants establish stronger growth for the months ahead. You Should Always Plant Tomatoes Using Transplants Ultimately you could plant a tomato seed in your garden and by the end of the season you would get tomatoes.  But if you live in an area with frost and cold weather your harvest would be small.   Instead we plant tomatoes using 6 to 8 week old transplants, that gets us a huge head start on the season, allowing us to have tomatoes a couple of months before the frost so that we actually get a decent harvest. If your tomatoes are big, healthy, and green… but taking forever to ripen this trick might help! You can skip a watering session on purpose.. When tomato plants get consistent, frequent water, they stay in “grow mode” More leaves. More stems. More green growth.. But when you slightly reduce water, not completely stop just stretch it a bit, the plant shifts into survival mode! And what does survival mode do… It focuses on ripening fruit and producing seeds! That mild stress can encourage your tomatoes to turn red faster! A few important things… • Only do this once your plants are established and healthy • Don’t let them completely wilt for days, just skip 1 watering session • This works best when fruit is already full size Dry farming is strategic watering! Sometimes less water = sweeter, more flavorful tomatoes 🍅 Save this for late summer when you’re staring at green tomatoes wondering what’s taking so long!! #dryfarming #tomatoplants #growingtomatoes
It’s called companion planting and it’s why I get more harvests with less pests. Here’s what I do: plant a flower + herb around every main crop. My tomato setup: basil, dill, marigolds. The flowers attract good bugs. The herbs repel bad ones. Your plants get to produce without being eaten alive. Real talk - this won’t make you 100% pest-free. But it builds a strong foundation so you’re not spending your whole summer fighting aphids and hornworms. Plus some combos (like basil with tomatoes) make your harvest taste better. Where are my organic gardening girlies who care deeply about the plants we grow (and how they’re grown), the food we eat, and the planet we live on?! Your garden doesn’t need a n overnight miracle- you just need to care for your soil. Our favorite ways to do so are amending our soil with compost and worm castings before each planting season, not tilling our soil, and avoiding all pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Experienced gardeners: what are ways that you have cultivated healthy soil over time?
Half the internet says bury tomatoes deep. The other half says lay them sideways. You don’t have to do either. I plant mine at ground level. After multiple experiments, I’ve never seen a measurable difference in yield or plant health. Check out my Homegrown Florida gardening guide ebook if you’re growing in Florida this season.
