Eric Garner's Final Words Became a Global Cry for Justice Eric Garner (September 15, 1970 – July 17, 2014) was a 43-year-old African American father of six whose killing by NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo ignited a national movement against police brutality . On July 17, 2014, officers confronted Garner in Staten Island for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. Bystander video captured Pantaleo wrapping his arm around Garner's neck in a banned chokehold as Garner gasped "I can't breathe" eleven times before losing consciousness . Officer Brian Gibson was D.C.-born and raised, proud to wear the uniform of the Metropolitan Police Department, serving and protecting the people of his hometown.⁠ ⁠ But in February 1997, he was ambushed at random by a man described in court as angry at being thrown out of the Ibex nightclub by an off-duty officer.⁠ ⁠ The shocking details of his murder are seared into the memories of not just his friends, family and colleagues, but almost everyone living in a city that felt much smaller and closer then.⁠ ⁠ “One of the things that's always hurt me the most is Brian was shot in the shoulder first, which means he may well have known what was coming,” said his sister, Terrica Gibson.⁠ ⁠ Nearly three decades later, she must now deal with the news that lawyers for Marthell Dean, 23 at the time of her brother’s murder, have filed notice he intends to seek release from his sentence of life without the possibility of parole.⁠ ⁠ He does so under a 2016 D.C. law that offers people who committed crimes before age 25 to petition for sentence reduction after serving at least 15 years.⁠ ⁠ “I have to say, part of me is very sad. Banks initially told police the boy had already left the house, but officers requested permission to search the property. During the search, police discovered the teen’s body hidden in an attic crawl space. Investigators later determined the cause of death was asphyxia, and the case was ruled a homicide. ⚠️ Arrest After the discovery, Banks was taken into custody. PART I As we hover around the 2 month mark of when ICE k*lled Renee and Alex, I wanted to take you guys through these three memorial sites and showcase how the community invests in and protects them. As I was walking through, I thought about how horrific it would be to lose my life in this way. On the pavement, surrounded by people screaming in fear and at the hands of violent cowards. No one’s body should leave this earth in the middle of a road. And yet, I feel relieved at the knowledge that, if that were to be my fate, this is how this community would honor me. Not just for a couple of days or a week, but ongoingly.
