Everyone should read some Euclid in their life! Not the whole thing but at the very least read the definitions, about the postulates, and Proposition 20 in Book IX! #math #mathbooks #euclid #geometry
Long before modern science, satellites, or advanced physics, there was a framework that quietly shaped how humanity understood space itself. Over two thousand years ago, Euclid organized geometry into a logical system that would become one of the most influential works in intellectual history. His book, Elements, didn’t just collect mathematical facts—it built an entire universe of reasoning from a few simple ideas: points, lines, planes, and the relationships between them.
What made Euclidean geometry powerful wasn’t complexity, but clarity. From a handful of axioms, entire structures of knowledge could be derived with pure logic. Triangles, circles, parallel lines—concepts that appear simple at first—became the language through which architecture, engineering, astronomy, and eventually modern physics could be described. For centuries, this system defined how humans understood space itself.
Even today, when advanced theories explore curved spacetime and non-Euclidean geometries, the foundations laid by Euclid remain essential. Every diagram, every proof, every geometric structure still echoes the same fundamental idea: that the universe can be understood through order, logic, and mathematical reasoning. What began as lines drawn on sand became the blueprint for how humanity thinks about space.

#ICYMI, last week we shared a new view of the Cat's Eye Nebula from Hubble and the Euclid space telescopes.
Pan across this wide-field view that shows how the nebula – created by a central, dying star – is situated within a halo of colorful fragments of gas zooming away from the star.
In this composite image, both the nebula’s exquisite structure and its location in the broader context of our universe are on display. Together, these telescopes reveal the delicate interplay between a star's final phases and the vast cosmic tapestry beyond.

What happens if the answer is 1? 🧐
Let’s say we try to simplify 7/9 using this method:
9-7=2
7-2=5
5-2=3
3-2=1
Oh no 😭!! Well that just means that 7 and 9 are coprime. They don’t share any factors other than 1. So the fraction is already in its simplest form. Are Euclidding me? All that work for nothing 😂

Euclid is on a quest to uncover the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy, and Canada is playing a key role. Through the National Research Council of Canada’s Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Centre, Canada is contributing crucial data, alongside expertise with participating Canadian scientists from the University of Waterloo, the University of British Columbia and others. @uofwaterloo @nrc_cnrc @universityofbc
With the power of artificial intelligence and the efforts of thousands of citizen scientists, over 380,000 galaxies observed by Euclid have already been classified! By sorting galaxies based on their shape, size, and other characteristics, researchers can trace their evolution over time and gain deeper insights into the influence of dark matter.
And this is just the beginning. By 2030, #Euclid will map one-third of the sky in extraordinary detail, unlocking new discoveries that could reshape our understanding of the universe. Stay tuned for what’s next!
👁️🌠 Dying Star Left A Cosmic Eye Behind
The Cat's Eye Nebula is not one smooth cloud at all, because new Hubble and Euclid views resolve stacked shells, fast jets, dense knots, and a bright central star still shaping the wreckage. What looks like a neat eye from far away becomes a layered history of repeated outbursts when the structure is seen clearly.
That matters because planetary nebulae show how Sun-like stars shed matter late in life and remake their surroundings before they fade into stellar remnants. Each shell preserves a different phase of mass loss, which gives astronomers a timeline instead of a single frozen snapshot.
The depth here is in the geometry and timing of each shell, jet, and dense knot. Unlike a simpler expanding bubble, the Cat's Eye records multiple episodes of ejection and sculpting that models still struggle to explain cleanly.
A dying star did not leave behind random debris or one simple expanding shell. It left an organized structure so intricate that the final years of stellar evolution look less like a collapse and more like a carefully layered demolition recorded in gas.
That is why this nebula keeps mattering long after its first famous image. It gives researchers a late-life stellar record with enough structure to compare theory against real shells, jets, and timing clues.

Euclid's proof for why there are an infinite number of prime numbers is so, what's the word...
...slick. 😎
You can find it in his book, Elements, specifically as the proof for Proposition 20 in Book IX. Euclid used more geometric language in his proof, which is expected since he is the "father of geometry" after all. 😆
And contrary to what some may claim, Euclid's proof is not a proof by contradiction! It's a direct proof utilizing cases.

I didn’t expect much at first when I was toying with the idea at first but when the chorus hit later in the song I ascended.

You may have seen my recent reel on de-icing the Euclid telescope. But JWST is also at Lagrange Point 2 — so why don’t we have to worry about de-icing it?
