This was undoubtedly one of my best days ever in the Everglades. I didn't even know that there were otters in the system until now!! This was absolutely an amazing moment for me. #scientist #researcher #otter #everglades

Every canal in Collier County now carries two apex predators. That was not true forty years ago.
Burmese pythons have been established in Southwest Florida since the 1980s, expanding outward from the Everglades into Collier County, including residential areas in South Naples. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida has removed more than 1,200 pythons from the county alone, with individual snakes exceeding 15 feet and 125 pounds. Recent hurricane seasons accelerated that expansion, pushing breeding populations out of Big Cypress and protected lands into developed neighborhoods.
Canals were engineered as drainage infrastructure. They now function as a distribution network for an invasive apex predator that did not exist in this system before the 1980s. The same waterways that move stormwater through gated communities also move pythons between feeding and nesting habitat. Canal-front property is not adjacent to habitat. It is part of it.
Native alligators and invasive pythons now occupy overlapping territory and feed on overlapping prey. Interactions go both directions depending on size. A mature python can take an alligator up to six feet long. A mature alligator can kill and consume a python. These encounters are no longer confined to deep Everglades habitat. They now occur within residential canal systems across Southwest Florida.
The scale is not speculative. Collier County alone accounts for thousands of documented removals, and statewide estimates exceed 100,000. Warmer winters, storm-driven displacement, and expanding habitat corridors continue to push the range outward.
The canal system did not change. The occupants did.

I’m removing invasive Burmese pythons from the Florida Everglades!
Can gators regrow legs or their tail?? Nope! As you guys might already know from my videos with Tadpole the baby gator! This video just came up in my memories from last year at Everglades Outpost. The outpost has recently posted that they’re selling the property and moving, and that they’re bringing Casper with them. —-Reminder- Casper lives at the outpost, he is not my gator, and I now have my own animal sanctuary I’ve dedicated my life to that I’m at full time that is 6hrs away so I do not see Casper anymore. I’m honestly hesitant to even share my memories videos like this because of how crazy and rude people get about this topic, so PLEASE be respectful. #gator #alligator #everglades #florida #southflorida #glades #adventure #coexist #respect #reptile #adventure #floridalife #southflorida #miami #evergladesnationalpark
Residential canal systems in Naples, Florida function as connected wildlife corridors linked to the broader Everglades watershed, which is why American alligators regularly move through neighborhoods, driveways, golf course ponds, and seawalled communities across Collier County.
The Golden Gate canal network is one of the most extensive engineered drainage systems in South Florida. Built for flood control and land development, the grid now functions as a year-round freshwater corridor linking interior wetlands to coastal estuaries. Water from Golden Gate Estates reaches Naples Bay through Henderson Creek and secondary canals. To the east, Picayune Strand, the CREW watershed, and Big Cypress National Preserve form a contiguous wilderness extending from coastal Collier County to the heart of the Everglades. Alligators move through this network the way they did before the infrastructure existed. The infrastructure did not remove the ecosystem. It rerouted wildlife movement through residential Naples.
Seasonal behavior amplifies what residents see. From April through June, mating season pushes large bull alligators across long distances in search of territory and females. Dry-season water level drops concentrate gators into deeper canals bordering manicured waterfront neighborhoods. Late-summer juvenile dispersal sends smaller animals into culverts, retention ponds, and driveways. Tidal exchange where freshwater canals meet brackish estuary extends the range further.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission estimates roughly 1.3 million wild alligators statewide. FWC manages neighborhood encounters through the Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program. Alligators four feet or longer that pose a threat can be reported at 866-FWC-GATOR. Maintain at least 30 feet of distance. Never feed an alligator. Feeding is illegal under Florida law and creates the behavior that leads to removal.
Naples sits inside a working subtropical ecosystem, not adjacent to one. The neighborhood is the habitat.
