When I was deep in it as a new mom, I remember seeing all the Pinterest perfect costumes and coordinated moments and thinking, “I should be doing more. They deserve more.” The matching costumes, the handmade props, the themed everything. It felt like motherhood was something that needs to be performed. Looking back at these early Halloweens though, I don’t see what was missing. I see tiny hands tugging on my shirt, little smiles, paint on the floor, and us just trying our best with what we had to give. I see love. I see presence. I don’t know who needs to hear this but motherhood doesn’t need the extra glitter. The magic is already there.
