An exonym is a #name that a #country does not call itself. This is the opposite of an endonym, names they DO call themselves. While this video mostly focuses on countries, the terms can also be applied to cities, regions, landmarks, languages, or peoples.
Also, every time I say something is pronounced one way I get lots of angry people telling me I'm so obviously misinformed and an absolute idiot. I realize that language is rarely homogenous and other pronunciations do exist so if you're from Toronto and don't pronounce it like that, I do want to hear how you say it but please be nice about it. I'm sensitive.

Palestine is just a European exonym for the land of Israel. When Herodotus lived, the actual name of the land was Yehud Medinata - all of the actual archeological evidence from that time period prove that. So foreign European exonyms have 0 meaning 🤷♂️
If you want to research a culture that’s not yours it’s important to do it deeply and respectfully.
Yoruba is an adopted exonym. An exonym is a name given by outsiders. This doesn’t erase the fact that endonyms exist, names we call ourselves like Ọmọ Odùduwà, Ọmọ káàrọ ojire.
This isn’t unique to Yoruba people, it exists all over the world. Japan, Hungary, Germany are all exonyms used globally, yet those people still have their own identities and names for themselves.
Even the scholar quoted using “Yariba” is Berber, which is also an exonym, they self-identify as Amazigh. So the idea that an external name somehow invalidates a people’s identity just doesn’t hold up.
Yorubas have always identified through subgroups—Oyo, Ijebu, Egba, Ekiti—while still being part of a larger shared identity. That dual identity isn’t new or contradictory, it’s how we’ve always existed and still exist today. All the subgroups still exist and identify as distinct identities within the larger group today.
This video is deeply offensive, and I’m not sure why this person is trying to position as an expert on Yoruba culture. In a multi-ethnic country like Nigeria, this comes across as disrespectful, especially when basic elements of the culture are being misrepresented and the “Yariba” word has now become a slur and ethnic dog whistle to denigrate Yoruba people.

Words are never neutral; they are instruments of power. 🧠📖
Throughout history, colonial powers have erased indigenous identities by replacing their true names with labels of convenience or contempt:
🔹 The Inuit were called “Eskimos.”
🔹 The Diné were called “Navajos.”
🔹 And the Imazighen are still called “Berbers.”
“Berber” is an exonym, a name given by outsiders to define us as “the other.” “Amazigh” is our endonym, signifying Nobility and Freedom. ⵣ
The ultimate triumph of colonization is when we defend our own linguistic chains.
How do you choose to define yourself? Let’s discuss in the comments. 👇🏽
