Misinformation thrives in the digital age, but there are steps that we can take as individuals to verify and learn from the information we see. As Vets and Nurses, it is our job to stay up to date on the latest research for the species that we treat. As well as to pull from our experience treating these animals to inform our clinical advice. That’s why, in the first instance, we always recommend exotic animal owners work closely with an Exotics Vet to answer any husbandry questions and to help guide them on their journey with their pet. We also recognise the value of online communities as a way to support owners, share knowledge and learn from experience. So if you are looking for online information, we advise that it’s from reputable, fact-based and judgement free groups. Most people buy guinea pigs thinking they’re an easy “starter pet.” As an exotics vet and somebody who has kept Guinea pigs for over a decade, I can tell you they are anything but. Guinea pigs have: • Complex dietary needs • Strong social needs • Very sensitive digestive systems • Subtle signs of illness • Specific housing requirements And when their care is wrong, things can deteriorate quickly. I LOVE guinea pigs and I very much enjoying treating them as a vet. But I would much rather see them thriving at home than meeting them in an emergency consult. Most of the illnesses I diagnose begin long before owners notice anything on the outside. UPDATE! Mooshi has a vet appointment Thursday at 1:30 👍. She’s doing well, had lots of snacks, and is sleeping for the day now. Her assessment by the exotics vet will cost $220 CAD, and then we’ll get an update on if surgery is a possibility and what the cost for that would be. Clarice was saying 🖕 your scale! 😆 I know I look good!! *It's good to get a weight and measurement on your reptiles on a regular basis. They do not show signs of sickness. Keeping tabs on weight, especially, helps track if something is off with them. If you notice a dip in their weight, call your exotics vet to see what the next steps would be. Staying on top of it may help reduce a serious issue from having time to accumulate. Bem infelizmente a nossa crystal já não está entre nós. Na sexta feira ela estava muito bem mas no sábado ficou estranha não conseguia piar achámos estranho e tentamos levar ao veterinário de exóticos mas estavam fechados. A crystal no domingo piorou, estava com uma respiração super ofegante. Levamos a um veterinário que atendia só cães e gatos era o único veterinário disponível. Sinceramente irritou me porque um veterinário estar fechado a um sábado e não haver urgências para aves ao domingo é inadmissível e é o único que atendia aves.Ela piorou no domingo à noite ainda mais, tentamos fazer de tudo ver em grupos no Facebook, conversei com um veterinário e nada resultou infelizmente. Ainda nem dois anos tinha... No domingo à noite já tinha ido. Não tem sido nada fácil 😔😔😔😔 Well, unfortunately our crystal is no longer with us. On Friday she was fine, but on Saturday she was weird and she couldn't chirp we thought it was weird and on Saturday we were going to take her to the exotics vet but it was closed. The crystal on Sunday got worse, it was super panting. We took him to a vet who only took care of dogs and cats, he was the only vet available. Honestly this bothered me because a vet is still closed on Saturday and there is no emergency for the birds on Sunday it is unacceptable and it is the only one that attends to the birds. We spoke with a Brazilian veterinarian and in Facebook groups nothing worked unfortunately. By Sunday night I was gone. It hasn't been easy at all 😔😔😔😔

Demeter stopped eating, drinking, and going potty on Sunday. I started our emergency protocol for bunnies who have these symptoms (moving her to a bathroom in the main dog house for isolation and observation purposes) and stayed overnight with her last night to provide care. Nicolle took over this morning. We’ve been in touch with several clinics today. If we don’t see improvement by tomorrow morning, she’ll see an exotics vet for more help. I’m continuing our protocol tonight, and so far, we’ve had a tiny bit of progress. She drank water on her own a couple hours ago, and she went potty — but it was very watery diarrhea. Wish us luck tonight. Demeter and I will get as much rest as possible, but I’ll keep a close eye on her until the morning. She’s got us all a bit worried right now. - Jessica
