The Kaufmann House : America’s Fallingwater.
Completed in 1937 deep within the forests of Pennsylvania, the legendary private residence universally known as Fallingwater (or the Kaufmann House) is an international masterpiece of modern design. Masterminded by iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the base for its design is organic architecture, a philosophy aimed at seamlessly blurring the lines between human habitation and nature. Instead of building the house facing the waterfall, Wright boldly anchored reinforced concrete “trays” straight into the natural sandstone boulders, cantilevering the home directly over the roaring stream.

Chez Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright pousse le détail architectural jusque dans le traitement de l’angle.
Les châssis métalliques se prolongent jusqu’à l’angle, sans montant massif venant interrompre la continuité. Et surtout, ces parties ne sont pas simplement fixes ,elles sont ouvrantes et équipées de moustiquaires, permettant à l’air de circuler naturellement et de créer une véritable ventilation traversante.
Même le mobilier sur mesure participe à ce geste architectural ,certaines ouvertures sont pensées en relation directe avec lui, jusqu’à adapter leur mouvement et leur dessin pour pouvoir s’ouvrir librement. Rien n’est laissé au hasard.
Chez Wright, la fenêtre n’est donc plus seulement une ouverture dans un mur ,elle devient un outil pour faire respirer la maison, effacer l’angle et renforcer cette continuité permanente entre l’intérieur et la nature.
C’est là tout le génie de Frank Lloyd Wright ,transformer un détail technique en geste architectural.

A Fallingwater é uma casa projetada pelo arquiteto Frank Lloyd Wright em 1935, na região rural do sudoeste da Pensilvânia, a 98 km (61 milhas) a sudeste de Pittsburgh. A casa foi construída parcialmente sobre uma cachoeira no riacho Bear Run, na região de Mill Run, em Stewart Township, no Condado de Fayette, localizada na área de Laurel Highlands, nas Montanhas Allegheny. A residência foi projetada como uma casa de fim de semana para a família de Liliane e Edgar J. Kaufmann, proprietário da loja de departamentos Kaufmann’s.

Probably the best house in the country.
Frank Lloyd Wright dibujó esta casa en dos horas, mientras el dueño venía en camino.
Llevaba meses sin un solo plano. Cuando Edgar Kaufmann llamó para ver los dibujos, Wright se sentó y la sacó de un tirón.
El dueño quería una casa para mirar la cascada. Wright la puso encima: «quiero que vivas con la cascada, no que la mires».
Y aquí está lo bueno: los constructores no se fiaron de sus cálculos y metieron más acero a escondidas. Aun así, las terrazas en voladizo se hundieron casi 18 centímetros. En 2001 empezaron a rescatarla con cables de acero tensados por dentro de las vigas.
