New research by David Gray, Senior Horticulturist at the Garden, has uncovered an archive of information, verifying the date of the original building to the early 1870s, and exploring horticultural trends and architectural innovations from the period. Transforming this courtyard fernery into a lush pondscape seamlessly enhanced its microclimate, encouraging moisture-loving plants and fostering a thriving ecosystem. Soleirolia soleirolii (baby’s tears) has flourished, creeping along the damp rocks and softening the pond’s edges, while moss has established beautifully in shaded areas, adding rich texture. ET, the resident turtle, has settled in well, frequently basking on logs and coexisting peacefully with the fish. While many assume turtles will prey on fish, temperament plays a key role—ET remains unbothered by his aquatic companions. Thanks to afternoon shade, algae is minimal, appearing only in the waterfalls where turbulence encourages biofilm growth. Who’s been here? This is the Fernery and display houses at Pukekura Park in New Plymouth 🍃 It’s free to visit and the perfect activity for a rainy day.

Here we have my large pond. Fit with a number and of Native Australian fish. We’ve got Native Silver Perch, Australian Bass, and the Infamous River Murray Cod. These fish can all get to a very good size. As well as the natives I’ve got a bunch of goldfish in here too. These guys spark controversy, but I love them. A lot of them actually came to me to be rehomed. They have great character and can live a long time when water quality is good. This garden features dozens of Australian native plants, found out in the bush and in and around natural creeks rivers, streams, ponds and lakes. This pond incorporates biological filtration, using plants as well as beneficial bacteria to naturally filter the water, no chemicals needed! This is a natural pool and offers me a tranquil and serine place to take a dip after a hard days work in the sun. I love incorporating native plants into a landscape, as well as some exotic plants here and there. I believe a healthy balance can be reached between native and non natives, I enjoy the benefits of both. A water garden or pond is such a great addiction to a backyard. From the countless examples of wildlife interactions that my clients tell me about, to the calming and healing properties of having nature and flowing water right out your door. I enjoy nothing more than visiting clients and seeing how their space is evolving, and seeing all my plant babies all grown up. Make sure the lid on the jar is sealed as this will help retain the moist atmosphere necessary for ferns and moss to thrive in.
