#fiberworks
Gorgeous design!
🧠 + 💻 + 🧵+ = 👏👏👏
Students in @jovenciodelapaz’s workshop “Pixel, Thread, Weave” used a drafting software called #Fiberworks to create weave structures including deflected double-cloth and overshot.
Grace (@_phlox_ ), who is seen in the video, told us that she likes using the software because of the “complexity it allows within the weave structures.”
Grace’s design is a deflected double cloth and we love the way it turned out! Made of yummy @jaggerspun wool, the piece was soft and fluffy to the touch.
Grace was the studio assistant for both summer sessions 2 (with Joy Boutrup and Catharine Ellis) and 3 (with Jovencio de la Paz). An accomplished weaver, she learned a lot during her time at Penland:
“I learned so so much about dyeing and chemistry and the molecular composition of fibers as well as finishing techniques in the first class.
“In the second class, I learned way more about Fiberworks, was introduced to the deflected double cloth weave structure, and Jovencio clearly explained double weave block tie ups, clarifying a bunch of questions I had always had!”

We have some cool idea for the fall that we are really excited about. I was working on it this morning when I started shuffling the tie up to see which arrangement I liked best.
•
It would be so cool to do an overshot animation, to document all the phases that it can transform into. And just watch the subtle shifts and undulations that transpire as things shift.
•
Back to burning that candle!

I recently had the pleasure of trying out Cyanotype with @almosturbanfibreworks of @almost_urban_vegetables :D this is a classic printmaking method that can be used to preserve images of flowers and other pressed objects as well as to make photographic prints! It is technically photography without a camera, which I find super cool! The first time we tried it, mine didn't work out so well, but after a few more attempts I was able to get a good print :) featured in the cover photo of this reel!

Introducing: art_work_2022. ✨
Oklahoma Contemporary staff are not required to be artistic, but it’s no surprise that our team is full of creative, talented and unique makers. This new, multidisciplinary exhibition — featuring a variety of staff works, from paintings, fiber and photography to ceramics, jewelry, literary arts and more — centralizes on the theme of a “happy place,” and the featured artists transformed our Education Wing into a bright, warm and serene showcase.
art_work_2022 focuses a lens on the many ways your arts center explores and encourages artistic curiosity, with staff applying this mission to their own creative practices. This is the first exhibition for many of these artists, and we hope it brings a bit of happiness to them ... and to you.
