A Day In 5th Ward 🖐🏾 Also known as The Nickel, Fifth Ward is located east of downtown Houston. After the civil war, this ward was settled by freedmen in 1866. Since the turn of the century, this area has seen tremendous redevelopment to revitalize the neighborhood. In this part, we grab a quick bite to eat at The Nickel. This quick service restaurant serves bbq, seafood, and their iconic sandwiches! Next we meet with Charlie, the venue and special events manager, of @atthedeluxe This historic venue, served the fifth ward community as a black movie theater. After its closure in 1969, the theater sat empty until 2015 where the Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation purchased the DeLUXE theater to reutilize the space as a community performing and visual arts facility. Residents in the area have abnormally high cancer rates compared to the rest of Texas. So I always hear talking about Chicken Plus and couple folks said I should try it….so here I am! I thought I was doing something being there early but that line was out the door! This was my first time trying them and won’t be my last! The fried okra was GREAT (I love fried okra) and that chicken was seasoned and fried to perfection! Crunchy, hot and FRESH! Now if it wasn’t y’all KNOW I would tell yall but this was a HIT for me!! Houston Neighborhood Highlight: Denver Harbor ~~ Denver Harbor is a neighborhood we’re looking out for, as we think this is going to be one of the next “up-and-coming” inner loop neighborhoods. Right now we think East End / Eastwood is in the early stages of “its moment”. Eventually, when it gets over-saturated and too expensive, people will look to Denver Harbor as an alternative. Development in Denver Harbor south of I-10 has been going on for the last few years. FORGOTTEN Black Towns of Houston: Galena Manor On this series, I want to bring awareness to the black towns and neighborhoods in the Houston area, whose history has been erased and/or ignored. Galena Manor started development in the early to mid 1900s. The neighborhood was a prosperous black community that was filled with black professionals. When nearby Frenchtown integrated into Fifth Ward, many Creoles settled into Galena Manor. As a result, the community had a thriving Creole culture. The area was known for Fidelity School. The school was as known for its academic excellence and extracurricular programs. Many students were so smart that they could skip a grade. Unfortunately, Fidelity School closed as result of integration with Galena Park Schools. In 2009, the school was honored by local politicians for its previous outstanding achievements in and contributions to the local community. Today, Galena Manor still exists as it did after its establishment. However, it’s lumped with the larger city of Galena Park, which is overwhelmingly Hispanic. Many of the original residents still call Galena Manor home. Let’s remember Galena Manor’s black history!
