If you’ve ever tried developing Super 8 or 16mm at home, you know the first problem… Finding a tank. The Lomo tank went out of production years ago. So you’re stuck scouring eBay, checking forums, asking around. And even if you find one, the whole workflow is manual. Every roll is a guess and getting consistent results from one development to the next is almost non existent. There needs to be something better. Meet Fränk, a semi-automatic, motorized film processor for Super 8, Double 8, and 16mm. You pour in the chemistry, Fränk handles agitation, timing, and temperature compensation. One standalone unit, under a litre of chemistry per fill. Fränk is live on Indiegogo right now, and the campaign closes in just a few days. developed my first 120mm roll ever at home. I usually send my film to labs to get it developed and scanned and was always curious about how to do it by yourself at home. ECN-2 night in the darkroom. Yesterday night we developed another roll of ECN-2 cinema film. The most important difference from normal C-41 processing is the rem-jet backing. Before development, this black carbon layer has to be removed properly. ECN-2 also runs at different—and in parts higher—process temperatures than C-41, so it really is its own workflow rather than simply another color negative film. The newest cinema emulsions are beginning to appear without rem-jet, which will make things easier. But there are still huge quantities of 35mm and 65mm motion-picture short ends being cut and sold for still photography. So rem-jet removal is unlikely to disappear from the analog darkroom anytime soon. And somehow, getting your hands dirty is part of the fun. #ECN2 #CinemaFilm #FilmDeveloping #SilvergrainClassics @joboartisan
