Looks easy, right?
One fish at a time. One print at a time. Countless adjustments along the way.
What looks simple in the final piece is actually hours of printing, composing and hand-finishing.
That’s the beauty of the process.
🎁 AND THIS ORIGINAL COULD BE YOURS.
I’m giving away this artwork, framed, with worldwide shipping included. 🌍

Printing one of my big fish linocuts
Each fish has been carved individually, which means I can move them around, rearrange the composition and create completely different underwater scenes using the same set of blocks.
These fish scenes are some of my most complex pieces to print. The paper has to make multiple passes through the press, while making sure neither the paper nor the individual fish shift from the positions I’ve carefully worked out.
Lots of planning and a fair bit of holding my breath! But I love the possibilities it gives me one set of carved fish, endless combinations.
I’ve always thought there was something pretty cool about being able to take someone’s catch of a lifetime and turn it into something they’ll have forever.
This 53 lb wahoo started with a traditional Gyotaku fish print using the actual fish. I still think one of the coolest parts of the whole process is peeling that rice paper back and seeing the print for the first time.
From there, I spent some time bringing all the color and detail to life, adding texture around the fish, and finishing it off with a coastal-style frame.
There’s a lot that goes into these pieces, but man, it’s pretty rewarding seeing them all come together.

What do the first steps of gyotaku look like?
This was fresh off of our first spearfishing experience ever last summer when @chris_ricard speared this beautiful trigger. Here I am positioning, inking, and making the first impression.
The set up is rudimentary as we had literally just gotten out of the water. I'm still in my wetsuit!
Pro tip: always keep ink & paper in your trunk, ya never know when you might need it 😎
If you're just trying this out, I'm always happy to offer guidance or help troubleshoot, feel free to DM me anytime!

The talented @saltynikki preserves our Cubera story for generations to come with beautiful fish prints.
This was my first experience being part of a Gyotaku fish print, a traditional Japanese method of preserving a fish’s impression.
What I didn’t appreciate until now was how much time and respect goes into the process. It felt like a celebration of the creature’s life. Carefully drying the fish, positioning every fin, applying paint and then the canvas. The process forces you to slow down and observe every detail.
It was a real opportunity to study and respect the fish, gathered around a table with friends, sharing stories from the ocean
Anyone a file fish ? Anyone want a job in Boston this November and December ?
