It’s Fly Fish Friday and today I’m throwing out some love to my Summit County friends at @fishwest in Kamas UT! When I’m making way to the high alpine water in the Uintas my first stop is @fishwest . Fishwest Fly Shop is located in the “Gateway To The Uintas”, in Kamas, Utah. Fishwest Fly Shop opened its doors in 2008 in the Salt Lake Valley and we’ve been serving local anglers and visitors to Utah ever since. The fly shop is a full-service fly fishing outfitter offering flies, apparel, and other fly fishing essentials as well as a multitude of educational resources, hosted travel trips, destination travel consultation, and guiding services. Winter fly fishing is typically one of our favorite times of the year as a reset from the typical crowds you find on a lot of rivers. It’s a chance to find solitude amongst the cold water and snow drifting through the air. It’s quieter. Unfortunately this year we’ve had the warmest winter in Utah history. In most areas, no more than a week with snow on the ground. Before winter could even settle in, it was gone. . . . #flyfishing #wasatchflyco #winterflyfishing #flyfishingfilm #cinematic

I filmed this halfway through a perfect dry fly day. After filming, it heated up to one of those days I'll be dreaming about for years to come. We don't see days like these in March. If you are wanting to get up into the mountain creeks and streams before the snow melt really hits, I think you've I got just a few davs. The forecast next week is for a day or two to get up to 80°. February update. @mlob1one & @todd_kramer fished together for a couple hours. Dry fly eats were exceptional and nymphing produced immediate results. Winter hatches mean fish feed, with a little snow flurry, they were fearless on the dry flies. If you don't mind a little cold, the fish are aggressively feeding. Booking trips into May and were looking forward to a great season. The lower Owens River dressed in a coat of white. The best part of a snow storm is when the sun comes out. There is a certain newness to the scene. The trout are rising middle of the day to hatching blue wing olive mayflies. This is the start of consistent winter dry fly fishing. Use size 18 blue wing olive parachutes, size 18 Adams parachute and size 18 olive sparkle duns. Before and after the hatch is time to nymph fish with size 18 olive quilldigons, size 18 bead head flash back pheasant tail nymphs size, 16 Frenchies, size 16 Duracell’s and size 18 French nymphs. If you own two fly rods it’s worth rigging one for nymphs and one for dries. Having a dedicated dry fly rod means you can switch rods quickly without having to rerig.
