AOG (Aircraft on Ground) is a critical aviation term used to describe a situation where an aircraft is unable to fly due to technical or mechanical issues.
✈️ AOG situations often require immediate attention to minimise downtime and get the aircraft back flying as quickly as possible.
👨🔧 Aircraft ground engineers or aircraft maintenance technicians, play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and airworthiness of an aircraft. They do much more than apply speed-tape and WD-40 the squeaks.
👨🏻🔧 Ground Engineers conduct regular inspections and routine maintenance to identify and address potential issues before they become serious problems. This includes checking systems, components, and structures for wear and tear.
👩🏼🔧Engineers perform scheduled inspections at specified intervals to ensure the aircraft complies with aviation regulations and safety standards. They carry out necessary repairs and replace faulty components to ensure the aircraft is safe and ready for operation. This can range from minor fixes to major overhauls.
Ground Engineers ensure all maintenance activities comply with aviation regulations set by authorities such as the CAA, FAA, EASA. The primary goal of ground engineers is to ensure the aircraft is airworthy and safe for flight. This involves meticulous attention to detail and a thorough understanding of aircraft systems and by addressing potential issues proactively and effectively, ground engineers help mitigate risks associated with mechanical failures or malfunctions during flight.
🔧 Engineering also support us with inflight monitoring of systems and can provide real-time diagnosis and assistance via telex or sat-phone.
🛠️ In AOG situations, ground engineers diagnose and fix the issue as quickly as possible, minimising operational disruptions to get us flying again.
Thank you to my Engineering colleagues who keep my flying safe.

“I’m pretty tired”, Pilot fatigue
Fortunately there are rules and regulations to prevent pilots looking like Forrest Gump.
Pilots are highly trained professionals who are routinely checked on knowledge and technical skills, plus they’re medically assessed to operate complex machinery, worldwide in any weather conditions, 24/7.
However, just like anyone else, pilots can experience fatigue. Long hours, irregular schedules, and time zone changes are just a few factors that can affect a pilot’s alertness and well-being. 😴
Regulations prevent pilots from flying more than 100 hours every 28 days or 900 hours every calendar year, although these are “flying” hours. There are also many other pilot duties; such as briefing before and after flights, turn-arounds plus routine ground training, plus simulator training and assessments. These duty hours are limited to 60 in 7 consecutive days, 110 in 14 consecutive days and 190 in 28 consecutive days, that averages to a 47.5 hour work week The restrictions used in Europe and the UK are amongst the strictest in the world.
It’s also important to recognise the difference between working a number of hours and being fatigued. While the maximums put in place are important to give an ultimate limit, pilots have a constant duty to monitor themselves and declare whether or not they are fit to fly. Fatigue affects everyone differently, despite rules and regulations, some pilots may feel fatigued more than others.
Pilots and airlines have a responsibility to monitor fatigue and pilots submit data if they become significantly fatigued due to particular trips or work patterns. A safety system is run by airlines and monitored by the regulators to minimise fatigue through proper rest regulations, regular health checks and improved scheduling practices. 📆
So next time you board a plane, take a moment to appreciate the efforts of pilots to be 100% alert to ensure we reach our destinations safely.
✈️❤️A well-rested pilot is a safer pilot🙏

Workhorse of the North.
The rules are simple:
1. Take care of the airplane.
2. The airplane will take care of the adventure.
