Every playoff game now turns into social media clips of head snaps, guys flying backward after tiny bumps, and fans screaming “flopper” every time OKC gets to the free throw line. Even national outlets and opposing fanbases have been piling on the Thunder during this playoff run, with some calling them exhausting to watch because so much of their offense revolves around manipulating whistles instead of just hooping straight up. At the same time, Thunder fans argue the hate comes from the fact they’re dominant, young, and winning a ton of games, saying every great team eventually becomes hated. Is #shaigilgeousalexander over-hated⁉️ _ Shai Gilgeous-Alexander gets overhated mostly because of his foul-drawing style, but the numbers say the hate is overblown. The knock is “free-throw merchant” and “all he does is drive into guys.” Yet in 2023-24 he averaged 30.1 PPG on 53.5% FG, took only 8.7 free throws per game, and shot 87.4% from the line. For context, 8.7 FTA is less than James Harden’s 10.1 FTA during his 2018 MVP year and less than Luka’s 9.3 FTA that same season. SGA also led the NBA in drives per game at 23.3, but he finished 73.1% at the rim — 3rd best among guards — so he’s actually converting, not just baiting whistles. The other side of the hate doesn’t hold up either “No bag”: He’s one of the best midrange scorers alive. In 2023-24 he shot 52.3% on pull-up twos, 1st among 80 players with 300+ attempts. His footwork package — hesitation, step-throughs, pivot fades — is why defenders foul him. They can’t guard it clean. “Empty stats”: OKC was 57-25 and the 1-seed in the West in 2023-24 with him as the best player. He finished 2nd in MVP voting and was 1st Team All-NBA two straight years. In the 2024 playoffs he put up 30.2/7.2/6.4 on 49.6% FG vs Dallas, with a 34-point Game 4 to save OKC’s season. “Can’t shoot”: He shot 35.3% from three and 53.5% overall. His 62.2 TS% was better than Durant, Booker, and Kyrie that year. He just doesn’t spam threes — he takes what the defense gives. The hate really kicked in after the 2023 FIBA World Cup when he cooked USA for 31, and again when OKC jumped to a 1-seed. A lot of it is stylistic. He plays slow, methodical, and hunts angles instead of flash. But he’s already a 2x All-NBA First Team guard at 26, with 70 career 30-point games on 50% shooting. You don’t get there by accident.
