💡🎨 Artist Tip: Frottage Texture! By @birgit_koopsen Frottage is such a fun way to pick up texture from all kinds of objects! Just place the object under a sheet of regular copier paper and rub on top with a crayon or a pencil. ✨ When you use wax crayons, you can then use the frottage piece for resist printing on the gel plate: The wax areas will resist the paint (so it stays on the plate). The white areas absorb the paint (so they get picked up in the print). I love the grungy, distressed look of this! What about you? What kind of texture can you imagine doing this with? All about Frottage. This is a technique developed by the surrealist artist Max Ernst in the early 1920s and is also referred to as “Rubbing”. How to use this technique: - Place a piece of paper over any textured surface and rub with a pencil or any drawing medium. - Rubbing in different directions over the same texture can produce varied results as seen in the video. - The texture of the object can create some interesting patterns on the paper and can be used creatively in your artworks. (Eg, of old walls as depicted by our BA @pauravi in the sketch above). - Best to use a low gsm smooth paper as it’s easier to pick the textures from the surface below. Paper use for demo: 100gsm Artist pad Student. This is a smooth textured cartridge sheet which is perfect for this technique. Give it a try and let your imagination run free. Came down to my beach studio (aka… the beach) for some texture + shape noticing. Tried a bit of frottage, play dough printing (semi-successful, need to try plasticine instead) and traced some pebbles, which turned into a lovely abstract little cluster of shapes. Then it started raining, ofc. . But it did the trick, felt like I had a little play whilst braving the elements. #collageart #collage #art #beach #play #graphicdesign #creativity #playdoughprint #frottage #tracing #drawing
