Reversible PEM Fuel Cell: this blue unit contains a Proton Exchange Membrane and platinum catalyst that enables an electrochemical reaction to generate electricity from combining hydrogen and oxygen into water (a hydrogen fuel cell), and if a current is supplied (say with two AA batteries) the process runs in reverse with the PEM assembly converting water in to hydrogen and oxygen (one side delivers O2 the other H2). This kit uses little “diving bell” structures to capture the gasses that can then be used as fuel to power a motor. Note that the amount of hydrogen produced is exactly twice that of oxygen- reflecting the composition of water H2O! The fabrication of PEMs is a complex process at the forefront of physics and chemistry under refinement since the 1960s. One of our customers just brought us this Nissan LEAF that only has 1,600 miles on it, and we are having to replace the entire hybrid battery at a cost of $5,000, because one of the cell modules that has four individual cells has gone bad. It is not recharging at the same rate as all the other 48 cells, and therefore it's throwing a code and we have to replace the entire hybrid battery. But let me take you outside and show you the insanity of this entire project. So I've taken the cover off the battery to expose the inside. It has 48 of these fuel cells, 16 of them underneath the front seats, 8 of them underneath the rear floorboard, and another 24 under the rear seat. In this battery, cell number 36 has gone bad, which is right here. For my customer, she's got to spend $5,000 and replace the entire battery. If it were my car, I'd go on eBay for less than $100, buy another fuel cell, and then swap it out. Now you've got to be careful. This is high voltage electricity, but any one of you guys at home should be able to do this. You just take all the bolts out and swap out this fuel cell. But it continues the bat-crap insanity that we've got going on with electric cars, where she's spending $5,000 for a repair I could do for $100.
