Two years ago, I was right in the middle of my MARPE & tongue tie journey, & part of that process left me with a very noticeable temporary gap between my front teeth. 🤓
And in the beginning, I was nervous about it.
Because for a lot of my life, there was this underlying belief that being lovable was somehow connected to being pretty enough, young enough, looking a certain way.
Growing out my gray hair had already forced me to challenge so much of that.
Then came the gap.
Suddenly my face looked different. I knew it was temporary, but I still had to get comfortable walking out the door, turning on the camera & letting myself be seen.
So I did.
And the more I showed up, the less I cared.
That gap took my self acceptance somewhere I didn’t expect. It made me realize how much freedom there is in no longer needing to look a certain way to feel good about yourself.
And then the internet had some thoughts. 😂
“FIX YOUR FRONT TEETH!!!! GROSS.”
“Those teeth!”
“Ugly.”
“She could eat an apple through a picket fence.”
Some actually made me laugh. That last one still does. 😂 I have pretty thick skin, & I knew these comments had nothing to do with my worth.
But what struck me then, & still does now, is how comfortable people become behind a keyboard saying things they would probably never say to someone’s face.
Ironically, those comments reinforced the exact message I had spent so much of my life unlearning.
That if you’re not pretty enough, young enough, or someone else’s idea of attractive, there’s something wrong with you.
There isn’t.
And while I could handle those comments, someone else might not. Words land differently depending on what someone is already carrying.
The gap is gone now. But what I learned from walking around with it stayed.
I don’t have to be everyone’s idea of beautiful to feel beautiful.
And I certainly don’t have to be everyone’s idea of beautiful to be lovable.
That might be one of the most freeing things I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older.

Having a gap between your two front teeth (aka a “diastema”) is completely normal! Oftentimes a diastema is caused by tight skin between your two front teeth (which is genetic and congenital).
However, SOMETIMES gaps can be created because of gum disease, extra teeth, or tooth loss in later years in life.
But…again most of the time it is from normal genetics — it’s just how you were born!
