Pray children to the Mecca of Geology
An unconformity is missing time in the geologic record.
Old stuff gets deposited on young stuff. But in theory, if you left your house for a month and you were looking at the expiration dates of stuff in your trash can later, you might be able to figure out the day you left with that hiatus in your garbage.
The same goes for rocks.
An angular unconformity is a special type of unconformity you can see with different sedimentary layers during mountain building events. Layers get deposited, they lithify, get tilted, eroded, and then more get deposited on top of them.
The unconformity in Catskill New York is absolutely world class stuff. You can see not one, but two mountain building events in the tilted layers there.
Makes you think right?

Hey chat welcome to Rocks for Dummies where I break down geology to beginner level concepts and we learn about the Earth around us.
There are three different rock types: Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic. Watch the video to learn about them.

🎶where’d all the time go🎵
An unconformity is like reading a book, getting through the first few chapters, and then all of a sudden flipping the page and being in a completely different part of the plot. The characters are in a different place or time, there’s maybe some new characters, entire sections of the story are just….gone…Did the author ever write those missing pages? Did they write them but then those pages got torn out? Are we even reading the same story? Or were multiple storylines from completely different books just glued together?
There are different types of unconformities, caused by different things like:
🤨A period of non-deposition (for some reason sediments weren’t deposited, no new rocks were created for maybe millions of years)
❌ Erosion: maybe rocks or sediment used to be there but got eroded away (“erased”) before the next “chapter” of the story was written on top of them later on
⛰️Tectonic activity: that’s what happened in this case!
This particular unconformity is located in a fault zone, where lots of movement of the Earth’s crust has happened and smushed different rock formations into each other to make this chaotic sequence we see here. The younger rocks (the top layer) are conglomerate, formed in an ancient beach environment scattered with boulders and rocks and sand. The lower, older layer of metamorphic rock is schist - it began as muds and clays, probably deep in an ancient ocean, and then was put under heat and pressure and changed into schist.
Unconformities are actually quite common in the grand scheme of things here on Earth. They can be confusing and mysterious, but can also tell us a lot about the processes of our planet and the specific events in a region or location.
This unconformity is at Sombrio Beach on Vancouver Island, in the Leech River Fault Zone. The Leech River Fault is one of Vancouver Island’s major faults and is a great place to learn about the geological history of the island! 🌋🪨🌊🤓

The greatest collision in Earth’s history! 🌍💥
Ever wondered how towering mountains are born? They aren’t just silent rocks; they are the result of a slow, violent clash between continental plates spanning millions of years.
When continents collide, immense tectonic pressure forces deep underground rock layers to buckle and rise into the sky, creating massive mountain ranges (just like the Himalayas!). 🏔️✨
Can you believe these soaring peaks were once flat ground? Share your thoughts in the comments! 👇

Geology is the science of the Earth, its materials, structure, processes, and history. It offers wide career opportunities, especially abroad. Opportunities include geotechnical engineering, oil and gas industry, rock and soil analysis, mining sector, groundwater studies, and support in construction projects. Geologists also play a key role in understanding and managing natural hazards like earthquakes, landslides, and tsunamis, helping make the world safe

Ever wondered why some rocks look like they’ve been stretched into pieces? 🪨
This is boudinage — a structure that forms when rocks are subjected to intense stretching and deformation deep within the Earth.
In the ancient Lewisian Gneiss, layers of different rock types were buried deep in the crust and exposed to enormous temperatures and pressures during multiple episodes of metamorphism and mountain building.
When the rock was stretched, the stronger, more competent layers couldn’t deform as easily as the softer surrounding gneiss. Instead, they began to thin, fracture and separate into sausage-shaped blocks, while the more ductile rock flowed around them.
These individual blocks are called boudins, from the French word for sausage.
Structures like these are a brilliant reminder that even solid rock can flow, stretch and deform when it’s buried deep enough, hot enough and under pressure for millions of years.
And in the Lewisian Gneiss, we’re looking at deformation preserved within some of the oldest rocks in Britain — rocks with a history stretching back billions of years. 🤯 #geology #geologist #scottishgeology #scottishgeologist
You already know it’s my favorite 🫣🪨
Probably well known that clear quartz, amethyst, citrine, etc. are all silica (SiO2)! But did you know that other minerals are also basically just quartz? This includes agates (chalcedony), cristobalite, tridymite, coesite, and others - the main difference between these minerals is their crystal structures! 💎
