If you grew up on Montgomery County, you remember the days when there was Bethesda and Rockville and when North Potomac meant out River Road, not Darnestown. Then, what felt like out of nowhere, Georgetown Prep was located in “North Bethesda” and people started referring to this mythical place…though most locals still don’t buy it. As it turns out, North Bethesda was officially recognized as a census-designated place by the U.S. Census Bureau in 1980. This designation was established for statistical purposes and does not confer any form of municipal governance. That being said, those that live in “North Bethesda” are not part of the city of Rockville (which has its own mayor, city council, and municipal services) but are governed directly by Montgomery County (so does that make it real?) In my opinion, Rockville stretches so far north (all the way to Shady Grove Road) that I find the designation of “North Bethesda” helpful just because it narrows down the description of location to south Rockville and the northern part of Bethesda.
