Here's a fun fact! 🦀⬇️ . You probably have never seen this, but my friend Craig the Crab loves to surf! 🤙🏼 . Actually, he is trying to catch his breath. Crabs breathe through gills which means they get oxygen from water as well as moisture in the air. . So they do this funny thing where they stand their ground and wait for waves to pass over them to wet their gills. . Makes you nervous for the little guy right? 😅 . Ghost crab predation is a major source of mortality (30-45% in some areas) among baby sea turtles. They often anticipate the emergence of loggerhead hatchlings and will congregate near nests in the moments prior to emergence, causing some conservationists to intervene. A crab darts across the beach, kicking up a spray of sand as the first light of day creeps over the horizon. I sat out before sunrise and photographed this Atlantic ghost crab (Ocypode quadrata) from the moment the sky turned gold until the lighting grew harsh. Ghost crabs are mostly nocturnal, venturing out at night to avoid predators and the heat of the day. As the sun rises, they retreat into their burrows, plugging the entrance to stay cool and safe until evening. Watching this one hurry to close its hole was a great reminder to appreciate the little creatures we often overlook. Before this day I wouldn’t normally stop to photograph a crab, but I’m so glad I did. They’re fascinating to watch — clutching tiny balls of sand in their claws and tossing them aside to clear and shape their burrows. There’s a surprising grace and precision to it, and honestly, they’re really cute. Someone had to say it. Shot on @sonyalpha a7RIV with the @sonyelectronics 200–600mm. Here’s something new and delightful: an adult Atlantic ghost crab - Ocypode quadrata. Sorry, yes, it’s dead, and it’s a long video, but what a cool opportunity to see one up close and intact! The first thing I noticed were the hairy legs. Those hairs are used to wick water from the sand onto the crab’s gills, to keep them moist. But the coolest feature to me are those eye stalks. The seemingly swing 90 degrees, from safely tucked away into elegant eye sockets, to vertically deployed above the crab for maximum situational awareness. It appears that there’s a hinge at the base for swinging the stalk up and down. So cool. Ocean Facts v216 🦀 Woah guys! Check this out—this little speedster is a ghost crab! These guys are crazy fast, nocturnal, and almost invisible in the sand. Spotting one during the day is rare, but this one looks like a younger crab that just molted. And get this—they can even see behind them without turning their heads! Nature is wild. 🌊
