GIRTHY HORSE? Once you’ve covered the basis of saddle fit, scoping & bodywork, girth fit is equally as important. I often hear “She’s just being a bitchy mare” “He’s so rude” “He’s always done it” I’ve seen people punch, hit & slap horses for undesirable behaviours when girthing. It makes me feel sick every time. A girth like the leather one above is not suited for this mares anatomy. It puts an awful amount of pressure on her sternum by gaping at the front and causing a pressure line at the back. This causes it so have a backwards pull and tilt to it which then digs into her side where the buckles are done up. This impacts her ascending pectorals, deep pectorals, external abdominal obliques, serratus ventralis, latissimus dorsi, sternum, ribs, delicate fascia & nerves in the surrounding areas. The sheepskin girth applies even pressure, has the ability to flex with movement and does not cause friction. This is why sheepskin girths are my personal preference. Friction to this delicate area can cause a considerable amount of pain, I often find synthetic girths are the worst for this. If your horse is “misbehaving” in situations like this, I can almost guarantee they’re not trying to give you a hard time, they are having a hard time.
