Canada’s auto workers are among the best in the world, and they’re at the heart of our strong and competitive economy.
During my visit to GM’s St. Catharines facility, I saw firsthand the talent and innovation that continue to make Canada’s auto sector a global leader. The agreement between GM and Unifor, alongside continued investment, sends an important signal about the future of Canadian automotive manufacturing and the good-paying jobs it supports.
As we celebrate Labour Day and the historic contributions of our workers, our government continues to stand with our auto workers.

🇨🇦 BIG BOOST FOR ONTARIO! GM Investing $1.1 BILLION in Canadian Auto Plants 🚗🏭
Despite growing U.S. tariff pressure, General Motors is making a major commitment to its Canadian operations.
GM workers have approved a new agreement that includes approximately C$1.1 BILLION in investment in Canadian facilities.
🔥 What’s Coming to Ontario?
🚙 Oshawa: C$144 million to bring production of the next-generation Heavy-Duty GMC Sierra to the Oshawa Assembly Plant.
⚙️ St. Catharines: C$215 million for production of a new generation of transmissions, expected to begin in late 2029.
🔧 Ontario Engine Production: C$691 million previously committed to support production of new V8 engines.
🏭 Ingersoll: GM has committed not to immediately close or sell its CAMI Assembly Plant while alternative production opportunities are explored.
👷 The new agreements cover approximately 4,600 Unifor workers in Ontario and also include wage, benefit and job-security improvements.
🇨🇦 This is significant news for Canada’s auto industry as it faces intense pressure from U.S. tariffs and ongoing Canada-U.S. trade tensions.
🔥 $1.1 BILLION FOR CANADIAN AUTO MANUFACTURING! 🇨🇦
The return of next-generation Heavy-Duty GMC Sierra production to Oshawa is especially important for Ontario manufacturing and skilled-trade jobs.

UNREAL.

GM Finally Fixes Their Rust Problem? | 2027 Frame Upgrade
This is one of the biggest improvements coming to GM trucks for 2027, and it’s something many truck owners—especially those of us in Canada—have been asking for.
For years, GM has relied on a wax coating to protect the frames on their half-ton and heavy-duty trucks. While it can provide some protection, I’ve seen many relatively new trucks develop noticeable surface rust after just one winter on our heavily salted roads.
For 2027, GM is changing course by introducing painted truck frames, a move that should provide improved corrosion resistance and help these trucks stay looking better for longer.
As a diesel mechanic, it’s great to see manufacturers continue making improvements that actually matter to long-term owners. If this new process performs as expected, it could be a meaningful durability upgrade for anyone planning to keep their truck for many years.
What do you think? Is this a big step forward for GM, or should they have been painting their frames years ago?

The day Oshawa, Ont., autoworkers have dreaded for months has arrived, as GM Canada is poised to cut a shift at the city’s plant, costing over a thousand workers their jobs.
Up to 1,200 workers throughout the auto supply chain are expected to complete their final shift on Friday as the company scales back its Canadian operations, according to the union president who represents them.
Liberal MP Melanie Joly said she spoke to GM yesterday and told them the Federal Government would be getting the money back...
