Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is an important time of year to raise awareness about pediatric cancers and highlight the need for funding. 🎗️
It’s also a month of celebration for Johns Hopkins Children’s Center patient Phoebe Dunkle, who was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma in May 2023, and her family.
This month, Phoebe rang the bell, signifying that she is done with chemotherapy! 💛
✨ Here is Phoebe’s story ✨
In 2023, Phoebe’s mom noticed her daughter was unusually tired and had unexplained fevers. Her pediatrician ordered lab tests, which revealed that Phoebe’s heart was in distress. The family immediately went to the Children’s Center for imaging, and Phoebe was admitted the same day.
“We went home two weeks later with a cancer diagnosis,” says Phoebe’s mom, Erin Dunkle.
Even while going through treatment at the Children’s Center, Phoebe wanted to give back to other kids. She has since raised more than $12,000 during the last two years for cancer organizations and has collected toys for the Child Life department at the Children’s Center. 🧸
Phoebe has also become an advocate for ensuring the hospital has kid-friendly adhesive bandages instead of “yucky brown” adhesive bandages, as she calls them. She has collected and donated several thousand adhesive bandages to the Children’s Center. 🩹
Phoebe might be done with chemotherapy, but her mom, Erin, says she wants to continue fundraising and working with charities.
But for now, “she’s enjoying being back in school full time with her friends and living her best life,” Erin says. 🫶

Repost from the amazing @thisischildhoodcancer
Many families of children with cancer are afraid to ask for help and may not feel as if they can really reach out if you say, “let me know if you need anything.” Instead, you can do one of the following:
1. Bring over dinner- families may not have the time time or energy to plan out meals or cook anymore and a warm meal can be so helpful!
2. Drop off groceries- Families may be struggling to find time to do things as simple as shopping.
3. Offer to take care of pets while the family is in the hospital- Families have a lot of stress on them and what to do with their pets when they are not around can just be an added stressor.
4. Offer to babysit siblings of the child with cancer (and make them feel special)- Parents of children with cancer are in the hospital a lot with that child. Siblings may need someone to look after them on hospital day. And make sure to make them feel extra special! They might not be getting as much attention after their sibling’s diagnosis!
5. Offer to help clean their house/yard work- During this extremely difficult time, these families may need an extra hand around the house, and it is amazing to be that extra hand.
6. Come over to simply listen- talk about whatever the family feels they need to. It could mean so much!
7. Sending a prayer 🙏🏾🤲🏾 in a message, text, voicemail. Those hit different @_christine.j

Thank you to everyone who boosted my last post and also those who donated! Our kids deserve more than 4% of the federal funding for cancer research. But I’ll tell you, there is nothing more powerful than a parent advocating for their kid ❤️🎗️ #cancer #morethen4 #parents #thankyou #gogold

@lillybumpus_giveforward shares their personal childhood cancer story today.
“Next month marks 10 years. 10 years of fighting childhood cancer. 10 years of unknowns. 10 years of wishful thinking. 10 years of “what if”. 10 years of scans and procedures. 10 years of poisonous chemotherapy circulating Thru her body. 10 years of burying friend after friend. 10 years of fighting to show the world what the #1 killer of kids still being the Lowest funded form of cancer research truly looks like. 10 years of fundraising for families and research. 10 years of wondering “when will it change.” 10 years holding her hand fighting for one day at a time.
10 years to get it to the White House. 10 years for them to listen. 10 years for wheels to start turning. 10 years to be able to look at her and say “Change is coming. Your voice was heard.”
Her entire life.
10 years.
Whatever you are fighting for in life, even if it’s one damn breath…..don’t give in. Don’t give up. Because your one breath, will allow all the rest behind you to breathe.”

Every mile logged and every dollar raised during The 10th Annual #MillionMile this September adds up to help childhood cancer heroes like Finley! 🎗
Finley was diagnosed with stage IV Wilms tumor, a type of kidney cancer which had spread to his lungs, in March 2020. After an intensive surgery, Finley spent months enduring rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. More than two years later, although Finley is now off treatment, he's continuously monitored for any sign of the cancer returning.
Finley and his Million Mile team, "Finley's Fight," are dedicated to supporting childhood cancer research to help find better treatments and cures for kids like him.
Progress is powered by supporters like you. And we’re so thankful for all that you are doing for kids with cancer during The Million Mile!
