Taiji: Dolphin hunters and trainers worked side by side to select 22 dolphins for a life of captivity. Why? For human entertainment. Don’t buy a ticket to any facility holding captive dolphins.
Taiji: The dolphin hunters quickly located a small pod of 10-12 striped dolphins. They successfully pushed the pod into the Cove. After the stressful drive from the open ocean to the Cove, the dolphins seemed too exhausted to fight. Some struggled at the nets in futile attempts to escape. Dolphin hunters grabbed them out of the nets and forced them under the tarps where they were slaughtered. A skiff emerged from under the tarps carrying the lifeless dolphin bodies to the butcher house. The dolphin drive hunts are made profitable by the captive dolphin industry. Please don’t buy a ticket to any facility that holds dolphins captive. Feb 9 3pm https://www.dolphinproject.org/campaigns/save-japan-dolphins/
Taiji: The dolphin hunters drove in a pod of striped dolphins, a deep water species. As the dolphins were pushed into shallow water, they panicked. Dolphins could be seen tangled in nets, pressed up against concrete and rocks in desperate attempts to escape. The divers grabbed and manhandled them as they forced them under the tarps where their lives were extinguished. Taiji: Dolphin hunters drove a pod of approximately 23 striped dolphins into the Cove this morning. As the nets closed in, many dolphins became entangled, some never able to surface for air again. In panic and fear, some threw themselves against the rocks, desperately trying to escape. There is nothing humane about these hunts. They are violent, traumatic, and deeply intertwined with the captive dolphin industry. Dolphin Project is on the ground, bearing witness, documenting the reality, pushing for legal change and advocating for the dolphins who pass by Taiji and are subjected to this cruelty. Please don’t look away. Help us take action: https://www.dolphinproject.org/campaigns/save-japan-dolphins/
Taiji: This is one of the hardest moments to witness. The moment a wild dolphin is turned into an attraction. A wild dolphin being taken from everything it knows… its home, its family, the ocean. It’s unacceptable that we are able to exploit dolphins in this way for entertainment. The demand fuels the supply. *images from Feb 17, 2026 Feb 27, 2026 Take action : https://www.dolphinproject.org/campaigns/save-japan-dolphins/
Taiji: The dolphin hunters battled with 3 Risso’s dolphins for hours before driving them into the Cove. The 3 Risso’s fought valiantly but one by one they were carried under the tarps and killed. The 3 dolphins stuck by each other’s sides throughout the ordeal, only to be ripped away from one another and taken under the tarps one by one to their deaths. Japan – Taiji: Dolphin Slaughter A different camera angle than usual from Taiji. Stop the whale and dolphin slaughter! The strongest and most beautiful dolphins are sold to the dolphin entertainment industry for more than $10,000 each. Stop it now. #wildlife #aquarium #dolphins #EmptyTheTanks #japan #ocean
Every year, dolphins are STILL being captured from the wild for the aquarium and marine park trade, in brutal drive hunts that take place in Taiji, Japan. The worst part is that dolphins not selected for captivity may be slaughtered. ➡️ Why do these hunts happen? The multi-billion dollar industry captivity industry is by far the primary economic driver that causes these hunts to continue. ➡️ Is there any good news? Continued exposure of this practice is a vital step in the fight to end these hunts for good. Thanks to exposing these hunts and the issues surrounding dolphin captivity: - 80+ captive dolphin facilities have closed/never opened globally. - Both capture and slaughter numbers in the hunts have declined significantly. - Dolphin Project together with Japanese org @life_investigation_agency have filed more lawsuits and criminal allegations related to the Taiji dolphin hunts than all other orgs combined. - South Korea + growing number of regions around the world have banned importing Taiji’s dolphins. - India, Greece, Canada, France have banned/are phasing out cetacean captivity altogether. ➡️ It may feel like one action is a drop in the bucket, but together we are an ocean. It’s up to all of us to continue taking action to continue making progress: https://bit.ly/HelpJapansDolphins (🔗 in our bio) #dolphinproject #dolphin #dolphins #thanksbutnotanks #animals
The Taiji dolphin hunting season is now in its final month. Each season follows the same pattern, driven by demand for dolphins in captivity. When that demand exists, the hunts continue. We will continue documenting, challenging and pushing for change, until the hunts no longer happen at all. Add your name to the petition in our bio to stand against this cruelty. Thank you to Kunito Seko for documenting the hunts and providing on the ground footage. *Numbers are accurate as of 02 February 2026.
Taiji: Although the dolphin hunting boats stayed in the harbor today, dolphin exploitation continued. 3 bottlenose dolphins were wrestled into slings and carried across the harbor. The dolphins were then hoisted up and out of the water, lifted, then dropped into crates and loaded into a large truck. During the process, one dolphin sustained an injury as blood could seen on its pectoral fin. The truck then carried the dolphins away to an unknown destination. The captive industry is only profitable because of the demand for captive dolphins. We can help end this by choosing not to go to dolphin shows, not to “swim” with captive dolphins and not to support any facility that holds dolphins captive.
