This is the famous Kodak Aero Ektar lens, mounted to a 4x5 Graflex Speed Graphic camera with a focal plane shutter with speeds to 1/1000th. This combination allows us to create stunning large format portraits with hyper-shallow depth of field and silky bokeh, let’s take a closer look at this remarkable kit. The Kodak Aero Ektar began life as an aerial surveillance lens. These optics were mounted in the belly of aircraft or in handheld housings to record images on 5-inch roll film, meaning they have appropriate coverage for 4x5. Aero Ektars are infamously radioactive, and the Thoriated elements can yellow with age, but this copy is uncommonly clear.
As we can see, the mount of the Speed graphic must be modified to accept this massive lens. Pushing this lever to “back” activates the focal plane shutter, which is cocked by tensioning this knob. Pressing in this silver button fires the shutter, and leaves the shutter ready to fire at the next speed down in the sequence, until all the tension is relieved and the shutter locks open. Here’s a better view of the shutter, showing how each speed is achieved by increasing the spring tension and narrowing the width of the slit that exposes the film. The Speed Graphic’s fast 1/1000th top speed allows us to shoot with the Aero Ektar wide open in daylight on these sheets of expired Tri-X 4x5, which we rated at ISO 100. #kodak #aeroektar #kodakaeroektar #graflex #graflexspeedgraphic #speedgraphic #largeformat #largeformatcamera #4x5film #4x5 #4x5photography #4x5camera #trix #portait #portraiture #portraits #demo #review #howto #camerareview #film #analog #filmcamera #shootfilm #filmcommunity #leica #35mm #filmisnotdead #ishootfilm #kodakprofessional

Hello everyone! It’s been half a month since we last met. The autumn leaves are looking great recently, and I’ve taken many test shots that I’ll share with you when I get the chance. In further tests, we found that the new Smartnon 178mm F2 lens has such strong bokeh (equivalent to around 50mm f/0.5 on full-frame) that it significantly lowers the success rate of achieving precise focus. Even the slightest tilt of the head when pressing the shutter causes a cosine error that can result in slight focus shift（this is exactly where the Hasselblad H system's True Focus would come in handy）. So, I recommend stopping down the Smartnon 178mm F2 slightly to f/2.5, which improves the success rate significantly. We are also testing new base plates and rear frames, considering whether to switch to CNC-machined aluminum or carbon fiber to improve assembly precision and ensure an accurate focal plane. We’re still testing, but results should be available soon. The Kickstarter campaign is being set up, and we are considering offering a 4x5 large-format projector as a gift to users who purchase the full set. The rear group has now been fully adapted, and with the ultra-large aperture lens, the results are truly stunning. Please stay tuned and help spread the word—this will help us cover our costs. Had some fun testing new chemicals tonight. Taking selfies in the 1850’s was A LOT more difficult back then. 😮‍💨 - This plate was made with “No. Z” collodion from @uvphotographics.
