What is graupel?
Graupel (or soft hail) is relatively uncommon compared to snow or rain but is not exceptionally rare, often occurring in cold, unstable weather when supercooled water droplets freeze onto snowflakes. #graupel #weather #weatherboss #connecticut
"Soft hail" or also known as graupel briefly hit West El Paso and Sunland Park Saturday afternoon, March 15.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Severe Storm Laboratory, graupel are soft, small pellets formed when supercooled water droplets freeze onto a snow crystal.
Graupel is also called soft hail as the particles are particularly fragile and generally disintegrate when handled.

We’re seeing what looks like graupel in #Alpine right now, thanks to our photographer Julio’s live shot. That’s around 2000’ elevation! The temperatures are cold enough that the rain is freezing around the snowflakes in the higher levels of atmosphere.
