Hot coffee
Hot coffee
The “0-gravity cup” was designed by NASA astronaut Donald Pettit to make drinking in space feel more like Earth. Instead of straws or bags, it uses capillary action—an angled channel that guides the liquid straight to the rim. When you sip, the change in pressure naturally pulls more liquid up from the bottom. It’s not just clever engineering—it also lets astronauts smell their coffee again, something they miss when drinking from sealed pouches. Did you like the content? The “O Gravity Cup” is a space cup created by NASA astronaut Donald Pettit. It uses capillary action to guide liquid along a small channel to the rim, allowing astronauts to drink in microgravity without using a straw or pouch. This design makes drinking feel more natural and also lets the aroma of the drink be released, something that is mostly lost when drinking from sealed bags. @luovhq

For decades, astronauts had to drink their morning coffee from sealed pouches with straws because microgravity causes liquids to float or stick to surfaces in unpredictable blobs. To bring a more natural experience to orbit, engineers designed the NASA Zero-Gravity Coffee Cup. Featuring a unique teardrop shape with a sharp interior crease, the cup cleverly uses surface tension and capillary action to wick the coffee upward directly to the astronaut's lips. Crucially, this open-top design allows the rich aroma of the coffee to escape, which drastically improves the taste and transforms a sterile task into a satisfying, Earth-like morning ritual. Drinking coffee in space isn’t as simple as pouring it into a mug. In microgravity, like aboard the NASA’s spacecraft or the International Space Station, liquids don’t settle at the bottom of a cup. Instead, they form floating blobs because there’s no gravity pulling them down. That means a regular cup of hot coffee would just drift away in droplets. To solve this, astronauts usually drink coffee from sealed pouches with a straw. The straw has a clamp so the liquid doesn’t float out when it’s not being sipped. This keeps the drink contained and prevents spills, which could damage equipment or interfere with electronics. Interestingly, engineers have also developed a special “space cup” that uses surface tension and fluid physics to guide liquid to the astronaut’s lips without a straw. The cup’s shape directs the coffee along its edge in a controlled way, allowing astronauts to sip more naturally — closer to how we drink on Earth. Even something as simple as coffee requires clever engineering in space. It’s a reminder that in microgravity, everyday activities must be completely reimagined.
