Full conversation I had with University of Maine's Forest Manager about their maple syrup operations, and how they're getting ready for the annual Maine Maple Sunday Weekend.
Nothing smells as delightful or feels more Maine than a sugar house in full swing on a snowy Sunday. Thank you to Dead Stream Farm (@deadstreamalpacafarm ) for the tour and treats—it was fascinating to learn and see the science behind making Maine maple syrup. Moments like this are a reminder that maple sugaring isn’t just a seasonal tradition here—it’s part of the backbone of communities across the state. From small family-run operations to larger producers, maple businesses support local economies, keep working forests productive, and carry forward generations of knowledge and craft. There’s something special about knowing that each bottle represents patience, resilience, and a deep connection to the land. Happy Maine Maple Sunday!
It’s the third weekend in March, which means it’s time to pull on those mud boots (or snow boots tomorrow 🙄) and head into the woods for 🍁🍁 #MaineMapleSunday Weekend 🍁🍁!! If you’re new to the festivities, sugarhouses all across the state open their doors for tours, demos, tastings, and (of course) the chance to snag lots of local maple products. Today we trekked out to @sparkyshoneyandmaple in Hope, and got to sample hot fresh maple syrup right out of the boiler (did you know it can take 70 gallons of sap to make ONE gallon of syrup??) 🤯 If you’re a local or just traveling through Maine this weekend, highly recommend making a stop for this annual tradition. Along with the first batches of our maple syrup, we’re creating something else very special for Maine Maple Sunday - freeze dried maple sap! We filter the sap right from the tree and then freeze dry it to remove all of the water. What’s left is a delicate and delicious pure maple sugar - perfect for tea or coffee, sprinkled on berries or buttered toast, or of course, as a pancake topper. Jars will be available in our farm market on Sunday, March 22nd! #mainemaplesunday #maplesugar #maplesyrup
A huge thank you to @tulleyh13 and @mainepublic for putting together this awesome video to explain the process of boiling maple sap into maple syrup. Happy Maine Maple Sunday, everyone!! #mainemaplesunday #maplesyrup #syrup #happyday
