Gray foxes are one of the most elusive mammals here in Orange County! They are common in the Santa Ana Mountains but are rarely in person which is where these motion sensor activated cameras help. These foxes eat a variety of things like rabbits, squirrels, birds, eggs, wood rats, mice, fruit, and more! Have you ever seen one? #ocoutdoors #fox #grayfox #nature #wildlife #trailcam

Gray Fox The Gray Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) is an omnivore with grizzled gray fur and a black-tipped tail. It is one of three members of the dog family (Canidae) that live in the Adirondack Park; the other two are the Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) and the Eastern Coyote (Canis latrans var). Like other North American foxes, Gray Foxes are considered to be meso-predators, because they co-exist with larger predators, such as American Bear and Eastern Coyotes, that sometimes prey on them. Gray Foxes are housecat-sized mammals with a long, bushy tail that makes them look somewhat larger than they actually are. The upper body of the Gray Fox appears a grizzled gray, due to the individual guard hairs being banded with white, gray, and black. The neck and lower sides are cinnamon brown. The Gray Fox has distinct black, white, and rufous facial markings. The Gray Fox does not hibernate; it is active throughout the year. Like other North American fox species, the Gray Fox is primarily nocturnal, but may also hunt during the day. We normally see them on our trail cameras at night. The Gray Fox is found in most parts of New York State and is seen throughout the Adirondack region. It is said to be most plentiful in the southern Adirondacks and the Champlain and St. Lawrence Valleys. Gray Foxes throughout their range are considered habitat generalists and may make their homes in a variety of forest types. In contrast to the Red Fox, which prefers forest openings, meadows and farmlands, the Gray Fox prefers woodlands over open habitat. Here’s a baby gray fox at my feet. They seem to cruise out of their dens later than red foxes. They sure are adorable. . #grayfox #fox #foxes #natgeoanimal #natgeoanimals #_fox

Mind if I borrow a bit of fur? A Black-crested titmouse prepares a fox-fur lining for its nest 🪺 it must have a gentle touch because the fox doesn’t seem to feel a thing. 📷 @familiesinnature #BetterOutside #TexasWildlife #igTexas #Texas #GrayFox

The gray fox girls in rehab with us here at @thecanidproject are spending a lot more time engaging with elements from “the wild”. This form of enrichment features bringing in native plants, nuts, seeds, fruits, that they will encounter in the wild and that are safe for them to forage through and nibble on. The dirt also contains small bugs they throughly enjoy hunting and eating too! This keeps their brains engaged, teaches them problem solving, and is just one more step needed for their future release. If you’d like to donate towards their care please see the link in our bio, visit www.thecanidproject.com or you can always Venmo: canidproject Thank you for all your support! . #thecanidproject #foxrescue #grayfox #enrichment #grayfox #rescuefoxes #foxrescue #thecanidproject #redfox #foxesofinstagram #babyanimals #wildliferehabilitation
